LOS ANGELES – A program to exchange guns for gifts brought in a record number of weapons this year as residents hit hard by the economy look under the bed and in closets to find items to trade for groceries.
The annual Gifts for Guns program ended Sunday in Compton, a working class city south of Los Angeles that has long struggled with gun and gang violence. In a program similar to ones in New York and San Francisco, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department allows residents to anonymously relinquish firearms in return for $100 gift cards for Ralphs supermarkets, Target department stores or Best Buy electronics stores.

Food is something that people must have, regardless of what they have to give up in return...
Especially for those that have children at home.
Unfortunately, there is the DARK side to this scenario too...

Those that have guns to rob, and assault others will thrive......
They TAKE what they want, and have no conscience.

The one's that gave up their guns, did so for a couple of reasons, some fear having a gun in the home, especially around children...some need to feed their families or themselves, and still yet, others find that maybe they can afford a gift for their families, if, they give up that little something called insurance....

This will NOT, as I see it, quell any violence, especially gang related, nor will it stop robberies and crime.
    It's a "CATCH-22" at best.
    My thoughts....

I just don't see many hard core gang bangers bringing in any tec-9's or glocks, always grampa with his old broken .38...

Just another fuzzy feel-good program to make a good sound bite on telly, foster the official agenda and blow smoke in the eyes of the Great Unwashed Masses. Make them feel good, feel safe, while doing nothing to really stop crime.
The owners could make far more money legally selling any decent guns - instead, they go for the Goobermint Bling..... [dunno]

Might make for some decent shopping oprotunities though. I have known different folks who have gone to the buy back deals and would walk through and find say widows selling their late husbands guns they didnt want, grandpa selling bring backs he didnt want any more or what ever and ofer them more than they would get from the buy back program and save decent guns from the goob destruction. You arent likely to get a bunch of ARs or high dollar newer guns but know several who have gotten some nice old pump shotguns, old bolt rifles some of which were collectable or at least nice hunting guns, and so on well under what they normaly sell for, saved guns and kept folks from being screwed so much by the goob.

My guns prefer a steady diet of frangable hollow-points but will eat just about anything I feed them.
