Do we have any gearheads here, of the Automotive/HotRodding type?

Not sure, but in Oregon, some of the Monkeys there, are into Rock Crawlers, and BackTrail Operations..... Is that a GearHead thing?

IMG_20131222_211824. KIMG0005.JPG Present. Here is my latest build, as you can see I am almost completed with the engine build. Building a SBC 400 to replace the SBC 350 that cracked due to freezing. I guess that's what happens when you forget the antifreeze. In 30+ years of working on my vehicles, I never done something so stupid.

The 1974 K5 Blazer it is going in got a facelift. I ditched my beat up rusted 1973 K5 body and frame and transferred the engine, transmission, transfer case, axles , seats.... over to the 74. I am gonna try my best to not beat this one up, at least on it's first outing. Lol!

My wheeler is primarily set up for deep mud. I beat my equipment up enough, I don't need any help from the rocks.

Had a Car in Autorama once. Did SCCA racing and autocross. Raced GP Motorcycles, 50cc to 500cc. Rode a Triumph solo coast to coast while in the Mil. Yup I think I meet the specs of Gearhead, I built what I drove and raced.

Reason I asked if my '94 F-150 5.0 302 ci V8 has an exhaust leak. So I'm going to just replace the entire 20 year old exhaust system. Its going to be in the Factory configuration of a Y-pipe going to a single side exit tailpipe. I've got figured out 3" exhaust including Cat on back. Having trouble deciding between 1 5/8" headers or 1 1/2" headers . Also wondering if my 3" cats on back might be too much on my stock truck. I was thinking it'd be good since it isn't dual exhaust .

I know it might not be impressive, but I have been working on it for a while. A 2 bbl Weber carburetor on the iconic AMC 258 ci inline six. I have to clean up the wiring with a new Painless harness and fix some holes in the tub, and it should be ready to go. I have a set of used front and rear Loc-Rite lockers that I pulled out of my parts jeep.

    mid February 2012 012 (912 x 684).

I still have to work on the carburetor- it is hard to start, a bit on the rich side (stinks), and the throttle linkage is a little sticky. I added a set of tire valve stems without the valves, and put them in the air cleaner's top cover. I can squirt starting fluid into the carb with ease, now. At some point in the future, I'll add rubber tubes that go into the cab, so I can squirt from inside, while I'm cranking it.

What are you trying to accomplish?

You can upgrade the exhaust and pass an emissions test with a dual exhaust, unless your state does not allow the vehicle to be converted from stock.

I am wondering why headers exiting to a single exhaust?

From what you provided thus far, it sounds like you would be fine with that configuration.

However, your choice of headers needs to be considered, long tube, short tube, equal length, ceramic coated(if rust is in an issue)......

Reason I mention this is some 4x4 trucks have issues with long tube headers with fitment. Some manufacturers headers have better clearances for changing the spark plugs over others. Generally speaking most long tube headers require some modification to the exhaust, if you are just wanting a bolt on

General rule of thumb for a stock small block with dual exhaust should not be any larger than 2 1/4" - 2 1/2" and single exhaust at 3".

Sorry for the long winded reply but I am unclear of your intentions and whether you are doing the repairs yourself, your mechanical abilities to do any modifications that may arise our paying somebody to do the work.

I am at the same cross road as yourself with my 94 Cobra, in wanting to dump my stock headers for some good flowing aftermarket headers. However, I am leaning towards performance, sound and getting rid of the 4 catalytic converters on a temporary basis.

One good thing about your 94 302 is it only has one Oxygen sensor before the cats, unlike later ones with an oxygen sensor before and after the cats.

Main reason I don't want dual exhaust, is the two gas tanks on the driver's side, afraid it might heat them up & possibly cause vaporlock, and possible loss with most dual systems of the spare tire due to fitment issues. The truck factory has a Y-pipe exhaust system So I figure keeping it in the factory configuration it will fit better as well as less likely to light up the check engine light. Shortie Headers that fit in same space as the factory manifolds. Its a 2wd truck and am paying a shop to use mostly the parts I provide, as its cheaper than their parts would be. Wanting to repair an exhaust leak, replace 20 year old factory exhaust, & a lil performance upgrade as well. As soon the old tired 200,000 mile leaking rear main seal, pistonslapping, rattling lifters long block will be replaced.

Stang rebuilding an old truck, though not as nice as a newer one, can be better than spending $30K - $50K on a new one. Good luck on the truck. Anybody can buy a new rig and drive it, not everybody is willing to keep an old rig alive.

gunbunny at least your rig has an engine and it is a jeep. Your rig would go places I can't. I've run with guys with Toyotas and jeeps they are a great vehicle to wheel in. Good of you to keep an old rig alive.

Thanks, Colt. I love driving the old YJ. The carb sounds great when you hit 2000+ rpm, it gets throaty. You just don't hear that from newer cars. My son loves to hear the roar, he calls it "the race car", albeit he's only 3 years old and doesn't know the difference between a car and a jeep yet.

    mid February 2012 008 (684 x 912).

This jeep will eventually need regeared, I believe it is only 3.07's. That won't do. Although I don't want to do a spring lift, I may add an extra 1" from a shackle lift to ensure there is no tire rubbing after I remove ALL of the stupid sway bars and panhard bar. (Really? It has leaf springs, people.) My old CJ didn't have them, and the springs on the YJ are vastly superior.

    Jan 2012 009 (1824 x 1368).

But for every Jeep I save, there were two that I traded away... I really wish I kept my original (as in the first) jeep- a 1946 CJ-2A. My friends called it the Gunbunny... hence the name. It ran, it just had some rust issues from it being used as a plow vehicle in it's former life. To anyone thinking of putting a plow on a Jeep, please don't! The frame rails aren't made for it.

I had this big idea of doing a frame off restoration and completely ripped it apart. I then lost the ability to work at the location where the parts were. Same old story... I had to sell the pile (and another CJ-3A) for some money to buy a CJ-7 that I thought was in better shape.

I figured out years ago, I'll have my ole Ford until I die. It fits me well. We are just alike! Besides these days even the Used Car Market prices are jacked up out of sight & Banks won't loan on Used Vehicles. New ain't worth it to me.
