Gunshots bring abrupt end to frantic 911 call http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/03/20/911.call.ap/index.html WEST COVINA, California (AP) -- A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence. <!--startclickprintexclude--> <!----><!--===========IMAGE============--><!--===========/IMAGE===========--><!--===========CAPTION==========-->A woman's 911 call was interrupted by gunshots.<!--===========/CAPTION=========--> <!--endclickprintexclude--> She was shot to death. The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said. "Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said. Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call. The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. "At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry," Rosenberg said. Investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken, Deputy Luis Castro said. While police were investigating the shooting, a man arrived at the home asking about his wife. When he heard that the woman had been shot and killed, he collapsed and started to cry, saying "No! She just called me. You lie." The man was placed in a patrol car and taken to a sheriff's station, police said. Witnesses said they saw one or more men running from the house, Rosenberg said. Investigators used bloodhounds to conduct yard-to-yard searches. No arrests had been made by Thursday morning, deputies said. As a precaution during the search, a high school and an elementary school were locked down for about two hours, police Lt. Dan Brooks said. I would be willing to bet this will not be the scenario in the event my home was invaded. My family knows to arm themselves first and foremost. Maybe this poor lady was trying to get the trigger locks off her firearm. <!--startclickprintexclude-->
Yes, that is sad. Sad that she had to rely on someone else when her safety was in jeopardy. Sad for the husband that "just spoke with her". This is why my wife knows where the guns are, how to load (if they are not already), and how to use them!
Now why would you want to own a gun, when all you have to do in an emergency is call somebody that has one. Gee, it's a good thing only the criminals have the guns.
Indeed a misfortune, though out of this tragedy mayhaps a little sense will come to the husband. I know I don't need to tell you guys, though remember YOU are responsible for your family's safety first and foremost. If you are miles away, how can you help them? Simple, provide the method of self-defense and the know-how so that when you arrive home, it is a criminal corpse they are taking away and not your loved ones. One day maybe a bunch of people will see a doctor about that rectal-cranial inversion they are suffering from. We can all pray.
that's tragic, but common. that is one reason I train almost everyday, either muay thai, range, run, jiu-jitsu, something.... my commitment to the protection of my family keeps them on their toes as well. "if dad takes it this serious....there might be something to it." i make my kids watch the news three days a week.
I thought that the story was going to end with BANG, BANG "tell the police there's no hurry" That's how it would end at my house. Reminds me of the Brinks Security commercial. The guy sees a burglar kick in his door and he shuts his bedroom door and turns out the light and peeks out the window. I'm surprised he didn't hide under the covers. The biggest wuzz on the planet. "yeah we have a guy breaking in our house, go ahead and call the cops for us please". I have D & R home security. Doberman and Remington. I call 870 not 911.
Just last night we noticed that there was a car with it's head lights on just sitting by our front gate. I stood by the front door with my Win 1300 defender and WG went to call the Sherifs dept. WG asked me what would I do if someone came up the driveway, my responce was they won't make it into the front yard. I agree with what has been said that the husband is respouncable for the families safty 100%. Luckily who ever was sitting up by the gate decided to leave before anything happened. OGM
Here you are looking at a 20-30 min respounce time. Our county is about 926 sq. miles and on average we only have 2 deputies on duty at any given time. So you have to take your protection in you own hands, (right were I think it should be in the first place). OGM
Tragic. That should be brought to the attention of the Supremes on the 2 nd hearings. I'd like to see their reactions.
