All I know is that we are forbidden to mix batteries like that in our ANVIS goggles. I believe it will overheat one of the batteries and start a fire!
I suspect that the different batteries are on different power supplies, one low draw for keeping warm, and the other fast draw to power up the transmitter. Not uncommon in some devices. In the case of the NV, I rather imagine that a single battery type is used, hence the prohibition on mixing. Dunno.

I believe that easily. If you mix battery types in that type of device, one can push the other too hard. It is a matter of matching current carrying ability (actually internal resistance.) If one type can deliver faster than the other can pass thru, it will heat. Important to match them up. That is the same reason you should not mix fresh and used batts in one device.
