I was watching the news tonight on the Israel incursion attacking Hamas... and I noted that the primary hours of attack were during the night time. Both parties were operating more in the dark to conceal their operations, amongst other tactical reasons. As we all know, you can see better at night with the proper equipment. If you are the government, you can have the latest FLIR, infrared, thermal, NVG and so on systems.

But if you are Joe blow prepper guy, what can you do to improve your combat/defensive effectiveness at night with the tools available to you based on availability and cost? What have you done or thinking about doing to improve your general lighting in your AO, perimeter lighting, defensive measures to deter night vision devices used by OPFOR, things you have done or plans to improve your weapons with night sights or improved optics.... ?

I for one have used motion detector spot lights to pop anyone coming in from various avenues with NVG's, there are motion lights throughout the house that will illuminate when someone comes in range hence nullifying night vision devices which in a tactical standpoint gives you seconds of advantage... which can be decisive. Adding trigicon night sights to all hand held weapons are complete as well. Things to follow will be NVG and maybe some other long range toys... how are you doing with your night fighting skill's?

Have been looking into this and when I sell some toys I am thinking about this Raytheon W1000-9 Thermal Weapon Sight . The price of $5.5K is high, but when researching thermal scopes it seems like you have to spend that much to get anything that is decent. Anyone have pros or cons about this setup?

Raytheon produces some great products.... I am not familiar with this particular unit.... but the company as a whole does a great job meeting spec parameters.

I have 1/2 of an ANVIS 7 as a mono using an AB Nightvision adapter.
Works well, 3rd gen. all the same hookups and adapters as a PVS 14

    way cheaper.
Turn the dark into daylight .. plus it really effs up NV.

Fe2O3 + 2 Al and a sparkler/road flare or KMnO4 a little glycerin and some magnesium if you want to be sneaky.

or there is that big brush pile in the center of the property. A gallon of denatured alcohol and a road flare. Nada to 40 foot pyre in seconds.

Yep, it's the cheap method of getting lots of light over a large area if you can't drop the coin on NV.

I have a Second Gen. Russian NV Binoc Set, that runs on AA Batteries... I use it for spotting Vessel Running Lights, after dark.... I can see them 10 miles away, easy..... .....

I like the PVS-14's because you can keep one eye active and have better depth perception when moving about. Of course, it really comes in handy to have an AN-PAQ4 which aren't available to civilians, and I am not sure if there's a civilian IR laser which is legal or on the market. Let's say I had only one choice and an IR laser was not available to me, I would go with an IR rifle scope (something like Mountainman linked) because the head-mounted IR night vision really is utilized best with a high powered IR laser. However, some folks don't mind using the monocular like the PVS-14 and a sight setup which would allow for it to be picked up with night vision. Think of it this way, either you plan to shoot on the move in tactical method, or perform a more sniper/hunter role. For the sniper setup, the scope would be ideal. It's a lot of money to drop on night vision, if you do intend on spending the money, plan to make it effective.

Long Range Invisible IR illuminator w/ Wide 70 de…:

I have never used night vision gear ( for more a couple of minutes) but I haven't seen any other mention of this.
If I was reying on NV gear in defense of my home, I think I would have i-immiters around the house and grounds, set for radio control. If needed, it would be like daylight with NV goggles, and yet nothing would show without them. (Since immiters do not require viable light.)

I have been looking at the thermal imaging CCTV style cameras. FLIR has some basic models that start at $2500 and some pretty nice ones for double that. They have composite video out which is easy to use and can easily be converted to send over a network. Position one up high on my 60 antenna tower with a pan and tilt mount and I can keep a very good eye on almost my whole surroundings without having to sit outside. Add a small parabolic microphone and I have better eyes and ears than when parked in a foxhole. A huge security monitoring force multiplier and it opens up the role of security to about anyone in our group. My tower pivots up and down so I can keep the camera stored safely away until needed and mount it with little effort when the need presents. Night vision ANPVS-14 is probably my next choice, similar cost and a bit more versatile than the ANPVS-7's. These aren't cheap and I have read of some Gen II units that are suppose to be better than nothing, but I've only used 7's and 14's so don't know first hand about the Gen 1+ and Gen II units.

The real problem with IR Devices is, to be effective, you need an IR Illuminator.... and that Illuminator is like a GIANT Light Bulb that says "Here I am, Shoot Me" to anyone with an IR Receiver/Detector... Where as a StarLight NightVision Device is Passive in nature, and amplifies the Light, already present, and allows you to see, without any Illumination locally. It also doesn't give away your Position, to others, using the same technology. Think "Zero Dark Thirty" and their Night Vision Equipment, that showed ALL the Laser Illuminators, on all their Weapons, as Green Lines, and Green Bright Spots, reflecting off their Targets.... Do you really want to bet your Life, that the OpForce, isn't at least as well equipped, as you are? Not this Child.... .....

....that would be why I suggested mounting them around the house and grounds...not on you or your weapon.

Bud has a gen 2 PVS 4 starlight that is good for many yards and produces no IR signature. Like the idea of "flash fires"--have a good supply of old fashioned flash bulbs and several reflectors from old yard sale cameras.
