OK, so I just might be kickin' myself in the backside for this but I wanted to check with others that may know more than I.

If I were to buy a post-ban AR (one without a flash hider for instance) can I replace the barrel so that I can have one?

I missed out on an Olympic Arms AR-15 at the range over the weekend. It sold for $550, but I didn't want to get it due to it's being a "post ban" gun. Only after it sold did I realize I may be able to upgrade parts of it to not include ban items.

Is that possible, or does a "post ban" gun always have to be a "post ban" gun?

    Thanks in advance
    Ryan

You can "un-ban" one. You can replace be barrel would be the easiest way. Or you can have a smith install a new sightblock with a bayo lug and thread the barrel. Also if you want you can add a folding or collapsable stock.

My local 'smith has un-banned a few for us.
If it came with a 14.75" barrel and a permanently attached brake, He can cut it off, re-crown and thread, install a FH and re-park.
    IIRC, it was around $100.

If it just had a plain muzzle, it can be threaded easily.
Collapsible stock is a 2 minute job

As far as any of the other features. Sure. Go for it. After the ban sunsetted, it was as if it never happened.

Isnt it if the barrel is under 16" the flash hider has to be permanently re-attached?

Yes, as I understand it You must have the 16" (in what amounts to one piece) or pay the tax for an SBR.
