You can make almost any household product you want to if you want to save money and have a little time. I "google"d how to make laundry detergent and came up with a website www.thesimpledollar.com/2007/03/15/how-to-make-your-own-laundry-detergent-and-save-big-money/. It is really easy to make and can save lots of money. This website is too a "forum" or blog. I also made my own all-purpose cleaner and window cleaner. I got those recipes by google-ing them. Since I have a 2 yr. old I want to make sure she cannot get poisoned by my cleaners. I don't allow her anywhere near my cleaners but you never know.
Another reason I started making my own cleaners is my mom DVR's the British show "how clean is your house? I love those two women. They are really into the all natural way of cleaning and they are funny. I bought 3 different essential oils to use when cleaning like they use but haven't used them yet. They are hired to go to a person's house and they clean it up. From top to bottom. Even better than a maid service. Boy those British are dirty but so are we.
    Anyway, happy cleaning.............

    I'll try it...!

I use a lot of my own cleansing products now...and can't live without Vinegar! It works for sooooooooo many things!

(And I love those British women cleaning.....they crack me up! )

I have made and use the laundry detergent. Works great and if you air dry your clothes, they will not stiffen up like cardboard so you do not have to use softner.

I make my own as well (well, DW helps too). Basically the same thing as the link, but we keep it in powder form.

Use a food processor to shred 2 bars of ivory soap
    2 cups of borax
    2 cups of washing soda.

Mix and use 1 to 2 tablespoons per load (extra large or soiled loads I use 3)

Here's a link to a thread I started on homemade cleaners a while back:

I use vinegar as well in the rinse cycle. I forgot to put that in the earlier post. I fill a Downy ball about 3/4 full. I started doing that before I made the detergent. Before I started using vinegar my clothes would make a crackling sound when I would take them out of the washer and I didn't know what to do about it. Then on-line I found the tip to use vinegar. What a difference it made. The vinegar releases the soap in the clothes. My clothes got softer and smelled fresh. And the clothes don't smell like vinegar (unless I accidently use alot of vinegar) because the rinse water is enough to delute it. I love it.
