Farmers' Almanac say a colder then normal winter ahead. The real teeth-chattering arrives mid-February especially in the following zones: Northeast/New England, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Midwest, and Southeast (yes, even the Southeast will be in the chill zone!). Colder-than-normal conditions are predicted from the Continental Divide east through the Appalachians. Above-normal snowfall predicted for Great Lakes, Midwest, New England, Pacific Northwest Frigid weather is expected in mid-February, which may also bring blustery and bitter winds, widespread snow showers, especially in zones 1, 2, and 3. Winter will hang on with stormy conditions up through the official start of spring, especially for the East Coast. The Almanac also forecasts an unusually snowy and/or wet winter across the Pacific Northwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic States; in these regions, the thermometer will be hovering just above or just below the freezing mark, which means some of the precipitation may fall as either ice or rain/freezing rain. Nah...everyone knows Alaska is all permafrost, covered with 12 feet of snow even in summertime...and Hawaii is a constant tropical paradise.
Par for course, then. I am mostly concerned with the length of winter, and last year it was nearly 8 months by my account. I don't see it getting much worse this year. As for the predictions about "averages" in temperatures, meh. Not impressed.
Alaska Cold as normal with bigger than normal mosquitos and black flies... Hawaii weather will be beautiful but who cares as long as @Hanzo is cooking ....
According to acclaimed TV photographer and failed engineer Bill Nye the Not Really a Scientist Guy we are going to catch fire and die before winter: Super-scientist Bill Nye still taking pictures of his TV to prove climate change A colder winter might well be in our future:
I am thinking the same, time to get busy. We have had really mild winters for the past few years. Last winter we had fire dangers for most of it. Since reading that, I have been thinking maybe I need to put an extra layer of warmth in the cars in case this forecast is correct. I only shoveled twice last season and I only did that because I like to shovel. I hope it is a snow-filled winter. We really need the moisture.
GREAT! Snowy and cold, just like it's supposed to be! Yea, global warming, yup! So Go at was WRONG! The Ranch is gonna get hit HARD this year, good!
Last winter in KY was cold but not unbearable, the winter before that was great, we were living in an RV while I built our house and it was comfortable.
Here is another forecast for a true winter. The Persimmon Lady’s 2018-19 Winter Forecast by Farmers' Almanac Staff | Tuesday, September 25th, 2018 | Posted In: Weather, Featured The 2018 Persimmon Seed Forecast So what did the seeds say? According to folklore, if you crack open a persimmon seed from a ripe fruit and the shape inside (called a cotyledon) looks like a fork, winter will be mild; if you see a spoon, there will be a lot of snow, and if there is a knife, winter will be bitingly cold and “cut like a knife.” Here’s what Melissa found: I opened up not my normal five fruits (containing 3-4 readable seeds each) but a grand total of 26 fruits, for a total of over 100 seeds altogether. Out of this total, I only found two forks. The remaining seeds were all spoons. No knives. This will be a winter for the record books in central North Carolina! Nope. There's no crystal ball. The best we can do is study trends and try not to ignore that big, orange disc in the sky.
Last winter I could have used snow tires down here! It's very unusual for us to get this cold but it happens.
Yup. People are studying trends and the report this year is that some solid black whooley bears have been spotted. get ready to shovel!
