I made one from a deer femur many years ago and fashioned a banner stone that acted as a moving counter weight by sliding towards the end as your throw extended, there-by. multiplying the force at the notched end a bit. My spears were river cane with knapped Dover flint points held by sinew and the fletching was from a red-tailed hawk that ate my girlfriends cat. I was diving for mussel shells at the site of the Eva Archaic Dig, beneath Kentucky Lake and had found numerous points and various other artifacts, including a couple of very fine ceremonial blades, one nearly 13" in length. The first banner stone I found is presently at the museum at Old Johnsonville. I knapped my points traditionally with antler and a deer-hide knee pad but will admit to getting frustrated while attempting to make a quartz banner stone with a hand drill and decidedly speeded up the process with Dewalt. After a month or two of practicing, I did nail a few swamp rabbits and tried several days for a deer or maybe a hog but just couldn't seem to get close enough and in a good throwing position on ground and fell out of a tree stand and nearly broke my neck trying to get a toss. It would still be on my bucket list but arthritis tells me it is not a likely event. There is a really interesting book on the Eva dig, Eva; An Archaic Site and another about the Harmons Creek Indians called Sun Circle and Human Hands. When I left that area, I donated nearly a ton of stone artifacts to the museum there, mostly Paleoithic.

Have you tried to master the Biblical sling yet? My grandfather made me one from a shoe tongue and two leather thongs when I was maybe five. I got pretty good with it but never killed anything bigger than a crow or a red bird. Did make the mistake of pissing off a wood-pussy with it once though and got my tail whipped for stinking up Granny's milking stall.

@Bishop do you make these yourself? What woods or products do you use and what is the approximate weight & length? Really cool tool.
