BOSTON (Reuters) - Are diamonds really forever?

An anonymous gift-giver left a $15,000 diamond engagement ring to the owner of an unlocked car in western Massachusetts with a typed note hinting at a broken heart.

"Merry Christmas. Thank you for leaving your car door unlocked. Instead of stealing your car I gave you a present. Hopefully this will land in the hands of someone you love, for my love is gone now. Merry Christmas to you," the note said.

The three-diamond ring with a white-gold band appeared on the seat of the man's car at a train station in Westborough, about 30 miles west of Boston, on December 7, police said. Four days later, the man reported it to police.

"This appears to be random," said Westborough Police Lt. Paul Donnelly. "I think there was a search for a car that was unlocked."

The 37-year-old man decided to keep the ring after a jeweler appraised its value at $15,000, police said.

With the note stating that it was a gift, why in the Hell did he report it to the police?
If he had a ring like that stolen, they couldn't get it back for him...

The only thing they could have done was take it from him. wierd

That's probably just the story that he told his wife!

Last year in a two month stretch I found about $400 in cash in three different parking lots. I turned it all in. I just knew that someone was out of their Christmas money. I found $300 outside of Outback a couple of days before Christmas, but I just knew that is belonged to someone that was looking for it.

That's different EL. I'm talking about the ring accompanied with a Note saying what it said.
I turn in almost anything I find. This ring seemed to be a gift and I doubt the police would've been able to find the former owner.

Around last Christmas, maybe 2 ago, I lost a wallet with $2600 and a Gold coin in it. Had pulled some extra cash to give my wife for christmas shopping. It was never turned in and this wallet had a hidden compartmt with the $2500 in it. I bet they pulled out the 100 some and tossed the wallet in a dumpster...

Had I found that kind of cash, I would try to find the owner via a classified ad.

Actually what I am thinking is that the person at Outback that said they would put it in the safe for the manager so that someone could claim it never did. That it ended up being put in their pocket. It kind of reminded me about what you said, I could have seen the cops taking that ring and it "getting lost." They guy got lucky.

Yup, if it was say a wallet where there was ID or something I would try to return it, if it was cash loose or something that dosnt have a way of finding the owner I kind of figure if I turn it in its just going to be in the pocket of the person I turn it into so it will most likely go home.
