OK I am curious to hear some opinions on Bug out/Backpack guns. I generally don't advocate for bugging out unless it is absolutely necessary, but if you gotta you gotta. My choice is a buffer-less AR pistol.

not near enough emphasis on being able to hunt - plenty of total BS on some folding stock riot gun that's barely FED legal - but nobody wants to talk about putting a rabbit in the pot ......

if your prepping correct - shouldn't be bugging out into the middle of Omaha Beach - shouldn't need belted automatic to get where you're going >>> in fact - good chance the long gun stuff should be carried legal and in the cargo area - your normal EDC should be enough >>> you're a prepper - shouldn't be mixing with the sheeple problems of society .....

See to address both of these. Many people live nowhere near wilderness or anywhere you can hunt. If you live in the middle of a large city and have to Bug Out, your main problem is going to be people. I do love my 10/22s though.

At this point for me it is a savage model 24, with 22 mag over a 20 ga and a 357 pistol. That gives me 4 different caliber i can shoot, she would carry a Ruger auto 22 pistol and a marlin papoose in 22 cal.
If trying to bug out to survive i would try to advoid a fire fight cause then they would know where i am at.
However, too many of us are stuck in old time warp, heat sensors, drones etc changes everything.

Hmm, if you have to bug out with the fam in a SUV from the big city during the downfall, 2 things:
Ya should have left way earlier before the collapse.
2-4 vs 50 bangers .. ya probably not making it out without losses unless you got a mini gun.

Other factors one might have to consider for weapon choice for BOL/backpack:
Where you bugging out to and where are you starting from?
What am expecting to encounter between start and finish.
What kind of weapons do you have cached there already.

Some might be able to get away with a semi-auto pistol and yet others are basically going to need an up armored van with run flats and gun ports with an entire seal team for support.

Pretty sure my oldest and her husband aren't going to make it on the east coast unless they can get to their sailboat.
Grayman that looks like the rest of the refuges with a discrete firearm might be overlooked.
Person running 511 with web gear and a backpack is going to be interesting as hell and targeted for investigation.

    all about location and situation.
I don't think there is a wrong answer outside of a 25acp automatic and a 50bmg (I would throw in elephant guns but ya know .. I kinda want a .375 H&H so elephant guns are acceptable ;) )

@3M-TA3 has a sweet .300 blackout that I think fits most of the requirements for a truck/backpack/emergency firearm. I am sure he will be posting a photo of it shortly. I do intend to build myself one of these in the near future. However, I need something for home defense that is a bit better than my trust G19 Glocks so...besides, I like the 9mm for home defense.

I am trying to get my hands on one of the new Springfield Armory Kuna's for home defense and truck gun...the plan was to purchase a suppressor to go with it but with them getting dropped from the BBB don't know what I want to do now. The Kuna is only 9mm and while I would prefer a heavier cartridge, it will do. The barrel is 6-inch (I would prefer a bit longer to ensure complete burn but...), 30 round magazine and I got a truck load of 9mm socked away. I did handle one and the quality seems to be excellent, light, maneuverable, good capacity, retractable brace, and the recoil will definitely please the wife. It's basically a replica of the MP5; however, they are very hard to get as just released.

BTW I'm not leaving, bugging out. The only thing that will chase me away is a wildfire.

I'm afraid you won't get much sympathy from some of these long time members around here, they are set in their ways. The main issue here is, you are trying to ask a very important question pertaining to a hypothetical situation. But, some old timers can't deal with hypotheticals, they only know what they can see.

Anyway, that's a long winded way of me saying old people care nothing about bugging out or anything this modern world imposes, because they are old. I have a couple books here at the forum just for the topic of bug out and city survival.

Urban Bugout - Surviving The City

BUG OUT REMEDIES (Complete Vol 1-3)

Such a grouch. Let's be more welcoming to our members around here. Not everybody lives in the mountains.

I'm an oldster, disabled and homebound. Living alone, cannot drive. Needless to say, my earlier prepping concepts regarding "bugging out" are out the window. I am here for the duration, good or bad. I prep for the realistic near-future emergencies local to me. Storm, power outtage, attempted home invasion. Got these covered. If a real major TEOTWAWKI event happens, I'm toast. I've accepted that. o_O

I just tell people, I'm jiggy with the Lord, what will happen, will happen. OTOH, I'm mostly already out - I moved to AK in 1991.
The problem we face here are the 'welfare dependent' class of folks - of which there are way to many to support.

(got to go sometime, it's best is if you can pick that time)

If i had the opportunity, I'd probably snag a FN P90 with the correct trigger pack as a backpack gun.

The rivers a mile south of me. Im pretty confident i could get there and hike the 30 miles or so to my great uncles farm. A few miles would be more open but still doable. I would take my supressed springfiels saint and the ol sig p365. Do alot of fairly heavy hiking out hunting. Low and slow!

Lots of solutions that will work. This one is mine - slightly larger than an MP5 but shoots the more powerful Sig Supersonic 300 BO ammo designed for the similar Sig Rattler. All solutions have pros. cons and compromises. This is my take on a concealed pistol for Portland riot season. For E&E a super common cartridge (e.g. 22LR, 9mm, 5.56) might be a better choice based on location and application. In addition BUIS or fixed sights were not used due to the very short sight radius and the urban AO in favor of green dot and laser sights.

Bugging out for us means we were mobile to start with and ended up caught out away from home or the boat. So getting home vs bugging is the prime concern. In a true TEOTWAWKI, Unless we were away from home of the boat and could not get there, or were forced out by fire or storm, or super volcano or a raging hoard, it doesn't matter, and this is where a couple options come up. I have my very fav HK-33/53 carbines one in .300 BO now, the original in 5.56 so we have a pair of ultra compact easy to stash carbines with enough zoot to get to our fighting rifles which get carried most everywhere we ever go, those very some, depending on various things, but it's ether going to be caliber .308/7.62x51 or it's .30/06 Springfield! But with the BBB hovering, I would absolutely order up ether a FN P-90 the way God intended, a shorty able to take a suppressor, or one of the HK-MP clones in 10MM auto, also in a shorty carbine with collapsing stock and suppressed, waiting as fast as I can for the bill to pass intact, or for Vance to override Congress and stick it to um, we will have to see how it all shakes out! Point is, we carry small, easy to conceal fighting carbines that could see us through for an extended period, if we had to fight through an urban area to get to the long guns, once that happens, we are golden, and it's all down to luck,t iming , training, and good stamina! If we were at home, we're staying, I got enough to fully kit out a division, we ain't moving unless it becomes untenable, and we have the means to make everything we can't take with us disappear. If we are on the boat, it's audios suckas, were outta here, put the screws to it, and head for that far horizon never to be seen again! There ain't no bugging with that boat, we just disappear, poof, gone!

DSC01120.JPG I like the Henry .22 AR7 type survival rifle. It's affordable, easy to find in stock locally, super easy to use, and can be upgraded. Higher capacity AR7 magazines work in the new model with a little modification. You can purchase a full steel barrel for it like I've done, too. A scope is easy to affix, even if it is an old type. Naturally, these will all negate the intended functionality with it all fitting inside the stock and also being able to float. But, all of these modifications do fit inside the carry box it comes with. For a semi-auto .22 I have to say it's pretty decent for taking small game on the move. I'm a BIG fan of remaining silent and unseen because no gun fight is a good gun fight, no matter your setup or skill level.

DSC01132.JPG Another setup I prefer is a CMMG type kit, which consists of a drop-in bolt and a couple spare magazines for .22 conversion with the use of your typical AR-15 rifle. It takes a few seconds, you're running .22 and can easily swap back to .223 in a jiffy if needed. This will permit you to have a wider range of practicality and conserve valuable ammo.

SInce we're on the subject of the BBB, here's what i'm after, the HK MP-10 SBR, just add suppressor and lots and lots of mags and you got an amazing little carbine/bullet hose!

And since were talking Bullet hose, here's the ultimate

Just as soon as the BBB gets passed, i'm ordering BOTH, buy once, cry once!

@VisuTrac @Ura-Ki I have never shot one but I just got to tell ya both, that P90 is one ugly gun!

Are you talking a MP5 10mm clone, if so, which one? I think HK stopped making the 10mm version quite away ago as no military or law enforcement requests for it, simply isn't in their business model which revolves around law enforcement and military first. The round is gaining more popularity every day so one would think it's the perfect fit for the delay-roller MP5. I would certainly take it, even though I got a ton of 9mm. Actually, the 5.7mm is gainly a lot of acceptance also. I heard it can penetrate many vests.
