We don't really have a spot for this stuff other than maybe back to basics and wanted it someplace where anyone who might have info could help. I have a couple of goats we milk and both are starting to dry up (both we think are bred so this is no surprise) but one of them appears to be getting mastitis (sp?) in at least one teat. A cream cheese type substance forms in the bag and you can get a few squirts of milk then this clogs it and you have to really squeeze to force it out then you can get a little more milk out of it.
I know this happens a lot in cows while they are producing and can be somewhat serious if not treated since it can cause that teat to dry up permanently in some cases and be a 'dead teat'. I worked briefly at a dairy farm and I know we used stuff called 'dynomint' that was kind of like bengay to rub on the udder and help get a fever and better circulation to fight it, made sure to milk it all out, and gave them antibiotics but I didn't ever know which antibiotics it was.
Dose anyone know if this is could also be a normal thing since she is drying up for her pregnancy and if not what antibiotics can be used to treat it or any other method's? We cant afford to take her to the vet and wont even be able to get her the meds for a week or 2 but when we get the money will just have to get the meds at the elevator and treat her ourselves, so any info would be very helpful, thanks.
Oh and we did have some general, wide spectrum antibiotic crumble feed we kept for stuff like this but the mice in the feed shed got into it and ate it all...guess we should at least have healthy mice.

Not I. I don't know much about that. I think you may be able to farm a forum about it though.... I am SURE there is a Goat breeding and care forum out there somewhere

Thanks. I did find some info on it as far as what antibiotics to use, penicillin, amoxicilin, ampacilin were some of the top ones recomended and a half tube of bovine stuff specificly for mastitis that you put directly into the teat after milking them out, but aside from the stuff you put in the teat it didnt give doseing info for the meds, just said to administer it intramuscular. I did some searching and finaly found that much. Thanks for the input though. Partly was hopeing to find if there was anyone on here that knew much of anything on farm critters and careing for them for future referance so could bounce ideas back and forth. I know some of the basics and even some less known stuff for a few critters (like rabbits) but am still a little new to animal husbandry so While I have gotten to a point of being able to spot and even identify a lot of the problems, solveing them isnt always as easy. Theres also the fact that haveing started into it I have gotten far enouph to realize my ignorance and how much that could hurt me in a SHTF senario where being able to keep live stock healthy and productive can be the difference between relative comfort and starvation, so figure even if I dont find my info here maybe it gets someone else thinking and looking to expand their info in the area.
Oh I also found that in sevear cases it can lead to gangrean and death of the animal, but I think this is a bit rare, haveing that teat dry up permanently trhough isnt to uncommon if untreated. This one seems to be a mild case at this point, so while it will need atention its not a major emergency at this point.
