Backseat driving has nothing on this. The U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved a plan to ensure cars will talk to each other in the future as part of an effort to prevent accidents.

According to the plan, vehicle-to-vehicle (v2v) systems would have to be installed in all cars and light vehicles, to communicate location, direction, and speed at as much as 10 times per second to surrounding cars.

The V2V systems would let a driver know when there’s a risk of collision and even automatically slow the car down in some cases.

“V2V has the potential to help drivers avoid 70 to 80 percent of crashes that involve unimpaired drivers,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “The potential of this technology is absolutely enormous.”

jeesh, more crap to break and take major $$ to get fixed.

Just like the mandated reverse camera. why? so someone can stay glued to a TV screen in their car as well as their home? yeah, I know they say it's "for the kids", really? I think it's more for the lazy person that doesn't check to make sure it's safe to back up in the first place.

Wonder how long for the first accident to be attributed to the auto-breaking feature. "honest officer, my car just stopped on the interstate, I didn't touch the breaks!"

Watch for a Law Enforcement BackDoor, in the Code, that allows LEOs to shut off the Ignition, at will from their vehicle. It will stop all the OJ chases that are ROUTINE in SoCal these days. ......

Can't they already do this with OnStar (i will never have a vehicle with is crap in it, if I have any say about it)

Well, Yes they can, "With a Warrant" and they have to supply the VIN Number of the Vehicle, which they get from the License Plate Data, assuming the Plate hasn't been changed. What I am suggesting is Direct Car to Car connection with a modified OS Running the I the LEO Vehicle. NO Warrant required. You either pull over, or they turn off your Ignition, Remotely. OnStar is Cellular Based, and integrated into the Cars Network, so that the vehicle will NOT operate unless the OnStar Box is connected. The only way to disconnect it is to Cut the Antenna, so no Cellular Signals get to the Box.

Some of the high end Audi's, BMW and Mercedes have started using some form of sonar to provide brake assist. This new system takes it to another level. What if a hacker nearby was able to get into your car's computer system and lock up the brakes in heavy traffic. Just sounds like another stupid plan to get you or someone else killed.

No. No no no no NO! At what point, if there even is one, are we going to say enough is enough? Get the F*&# out of my car, house, bank, wallet, network, office, grocery store, gas station and Doctor's Office!

And when the Audi system sees a tree (or steel power pole) coming over the hill toward you, it hits your brakes. Or, the guy ahead of you at the light decides to jump early. Gotta luv the concept.

I'm not looking forward to the time and potential expense necessary to keep an "older" car on the road but it's almost to the point that it's the only option.

Perfect ! I can't wait to see how that system gets hacked and manipulated.

Dim the lights, here we go :) :

Since your vehicle will have a short range communications system, you won't need keys anymore. Your vehicle will just read your ( soon to be ) Obamacare mandated RFID chip in your arm that also contains a blood alcohol and toxicology meter. All of your devices will be synced to your vehicle which include credit card numbers, medical history and genetic DNA map ( stored in your RFID chip ), and who knows what else.. And it will all be broadcast, on a secure network of course. Just like the network of Target and Neiman Marcus...

And yes, it will also give rise to a whole new level of LEO's behaving badly once they can just pull the plug on your ignition. But since everything is synced, the LEO's will just erase your video of the event from the comfort of their vehicle.

And remember back in the time when carjackers had to wait for you to stop ? Now they'll just stop your car for themselves. Helpful hint - be armed...
