  1. Lost Cabin

    Lost Cabin Neophyte Monkey

My screen name Lost Cabin is what I have been working on for quite a few years now. It looks more like an abandoned and rusted out shack tucked way back in the trees. But is completely insulated and weather tight and with most modern inconveniences to live comfortably.

I have been in survival mode for most of my life. Might say getting a whole lot more serious around 2009. Up until very recently a survival forum has kept me interested and contributing a lot of content. Unfortunately about two years ago they posted a major rules update. Since then I noticed a lot of regular long term members no longer participating. I am sort of understanding why.

So please tell me what this site is all about. I built a cabin out in the back country to get away from the big city life. Just got so tired of dealing with the high cost of living and restrictions the local government is imposing on every aspect of what a small business owner can do. Not to mention being taxed right out of existence. Unfortunately this mindset is now global. Even in small town USA.

My little cabin is two story and completely built without anyone elses help. Using only my two hands not relying on any major machinery either. Absolutely no outside help at all. It is steel construction and utilizing a 20 ft conex as a foundation to build from. Now having over 850 sq ft, it is very livable. At first I was completely off-grid relying just on solar power.

Last year I finally got tied to the grid since not everything can run on my small array. The shop is now under construction and will be filled with all types of machinery. I even have a monster three phase diesel generator to operate them if the grid goes down.

From the very beginning I have documented the complete build of cabin including every problem and solution encountered along the way. Repurposing used materials throughout construction has saved a fortune in cost. One major holdup right now is water. I am working out details for rain water collection, but also considering a shallow well. It is a complete DIY build from the ground up.

The local water utilities just doubled its monthly service charge. Actual cost of water is negligible, but the overhead to have it is no longer an option for me. I have UV treatment and filtering to take care of any concerns with drinking water.

Before I get too carried away, is there any interest in a lot of DIY content? Someone suggested starting a blog, if that is still a current thing. I dont spend too much time living behind a computer screen these days. I also hate modern smart phones, but have little choice anymore, since coverage is almost nonexistent where I live.

The guy that used to go around asking "Can you hear me now?" never got an answer back from my place. But then again, I dont even have a mailing address yet. Surprised the county has not come down on me for that. Maybe because they dont have my address.:D

Some thing s I like to do in my spare time is resurrect older vehicles. Anything from Model A's, old Jeeps, fifties and sixties era trucks, early Broncos, and well most stuff that might still run when the world is in turmoil.

Another bit of pleasure I derive is breathing new life in old dinosaur chainsaws from many decades ago. Mostly the bigger ones with gear reduction. My small piece of paradise is mostly oak trees and some occasional hickories thrown in for good measure. Always watching my step for copperattlemoccasins. I have been transplanting a few pine trees around my place. Tho not common when I live, they do seem to look good and grow well. They sure sprout up quick enough. So on the acreage there is plenty of firewood to feed the pot belly stove on cold nights.

My dislikes include Facebook, X, Tiktok, and most other social media sites. OH yea, most utube videos too. While there are some very good videos, the vast majority do not make the cut. This of course, is my not always so humble opinion.

Yes, a hearty welcome from North Idaho!

"So please tell me what this site is all about."
Well, in short, its damn near about everything and anything that concerns survival whether that is how to make clean water, grow a garden or politics...which itself has become about survival in this era. We talk about everything and anything from the Epstein Files to the price of Gold to History, to firearms, etc. or just to let off steam.

Lots of experience on this site in about every discipline. We got welders, carpenters, farmers, knife makers, communications engineers, computer techs, soldiers, etc. There is seldom a topic that comes up that someone here doesn't have direct experience. We have members all over the US and some from overseas like Australia, and parts of Scandinavia.

You won't find WOKE here and you'll be wasting your breath trying to preach it. The Moderators are fair yet don't tolerate BS. What I like about them is they truly make an effort to be fair. A person is expected to be respectful of all opinions and not insult people's religion (or their mother), and one simply won't have a problem.

I don't use any other forums because frankly I have never had to as I find whatever I need here without bias or criticism just knowledge. Yeah, we get our share of 'know-it-all' personalities or even Leftist Trolls but in all honesty, they don't last long before moving on...for obvious reasons. First, they are not welcomed here. Second, like I said, there is a lot of experience here and folks here deal in facts which never sit well with those types of individuals.

Anyway, stick around a while and see if you like it here. Personally, I think you will fit right in. I'm interested in your water problem...sure seems like you need a Well even if you got to bring in outside help to do it but that is a topic for a different time. Welcome!
