How to select the proper type of grass.....

I'm considering planting ( spreading of seed anyway!) of some type of grass that doesn't need to be mowed.....( short stuff?)
I need to cover some open areas that are prone to become muddy beyond my wildest nightmares whenever it rains...
It's for my land up north at 5,200 elevation.
I have not had a lawn, nor had to mow one, for longer than I care to remember!
I just need an idea of what would work basically as a ground cover, to absorb some of the rain, and keep the place from being a complete disaster.
Not many birds anywhere in the area...maybe a couple blackbirds seen in 10 days time....Nothing to eat up all the seeds!
    Thanks!

    fortunateson I hate Illinois Nazis!

They advertise Zoysia as only needing 2-3 mowing / year. I have no idea how it will grow in your area. I have a lot of shade and was told it won't do well.

To tell the truth, I'd love to find that rough nasty stuff they plant on the sides of highways. That stuff is basically a weed, and will grow anywhere. I have erosion problems on the side of my house in an area that no one will see anyway. They do NOT sell that at HD or Lowes. Only the fancy stuff there.
That might work for you, but you might need to get a brush hog in there once a year.

Second choice for me is something (don't know what) that my rabbits can eat - killing 2 birds with one stone.

Exactly what we were researching those "plugs" once advertised on tv...
I Found the seed, needs a lot of sun and 2 years to do much good though. I have an over-abundance of trees/shade.
May have to settle for something aggressive, but hope I dont have to cut it! We also were hoping we could use it for grazing purposes....so maybe height may not be a real probelm...and we could loose the rabbits into the fenced off areas, and let them have a "field day" as it were!
Lots to do, and so little to do with!

Look and see if creeping red fescue will grow in your area. And you may wont to consider looking for someone to hydroseed the area. The results will be a lot better than attempting to hand seed the area.
