@TnAndy Yea, I got woke Up at 1:30Am local by the Marine VHF Tsunami Warming via USCG...So I gets up and goes out and Starts the Genset, So's I can power up the place while I wait out the Warning.... Then the State Emergency Management Folks called, and told me everything the USCG said, with a Recorded Message but NO Wave Hight or Timing Information.... So I call them Back while my HF Radio's are warming up, and ask the Guy, "What are the Expected Wave Heights? and timing for Elfin Cove? (Elfin Cove is out on the Coast, about 30 miles west, and there are a bunch of Islands between there and here,,,) He tells me he doesn't have that Information just yet, but to look on their WebSite.... I tell him that I am the Contact Point for my Community, and we got a bunch of Folks, that live close to the Beach around here, so "I NEED THAT INFORMATION, NOW"... He says he will get back to me... Click... So now the HF Radios are up and running and I go to the Alaska Emergency Frequency, and the North Pacific HF Marine Calling Frequency, and start listening.... Lots of Tug & Barges making noise, but they don't know any more than I do, at this point... AEF is DEAD Silent.... So about 1:50Am local the phone rings and it is the AEM Guy... Timing for Elfin Cove is 1:55Am local but NO WAVE HEIGHT data is available.... He is a DUFUS... I thank him for the call and then finally the TSUNAMI Webpage finishes Loading, (Slower than Slug Slime) and I see the ONLY Observed Wave Height Data is from Old Harbor, on Kodiak Island, and it was .5 Meters.... Sigh, Now I am awake and Hyped Up, and so I turn on the Tv, and CNN is saying there is a 30Ft wave coming... It is obvious "They don't KNOW CRAP" because I went to the Wave Height Bouys Site and most didn't even detect the Tsunami Wave because there is a storm out in the gulf and it is kicking up 6Ft Waves, already... By now it is 3:30Am local and the phone rings again, and it is the AEM Guy again, and he says they just went down to a Tsunami Advisory for the Coast... While I am talking to him, the USCG comes on the Marine VHF Radio, and says the same thing.... I advise him that his Website is slower than Dog Crap, and they need to get more Bandwidth... He says their Server Crashed from the overloaded Internet connection... "Not a Good Thing" I said, and hung up.... I go get a bite to eat, and now it is 4:00Am and the Phone rings AGAIN, and it is the AEM Guy, and he says they have canceled the Advisory... Nice... So I turn on the Tv to a movie, and watch "Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy" till daylight.... Then went out and brushed the snow off the Truck, and changed the LubeOil in the South Genset.... Morning chores are done... Called the Bush Pilot, and advised that the Runway has 1.5" of Sticky Snow on it, so he can fly a Wheel Plane here tomorrow, when he brings AlaskaChick home from Town.... Oh What Fun... but not much sleep...

Sometimes I think no info is better than bad info. On the other hand, I'd like to be awake when the crisis hits than sleep thru a tsunami that would push me up the inlet or worse. The taxes SHOULD work, but, well, we know they are loafers, not workers, those dern taxes.

Read a science fiction story one time that in any bureaucracy, it is a guaranteed that a warning system will most likely fail the first time it is used and the longer the span before use, the more likely it is to fail. No offense meant but the people who run them are not highly motivated in the long run, aren't over paid and the best are either promoted or move on, the resources, buoys, alarms, computer nets, are usually installed and operated by the lowest bidder, and given the results we see of the fallout in Hawaii for the false warning, any operators that are on duty are most likely to be more worried in covering their actions than in a timely warning. The data I saw indicated that the quake happened at about 12.30 and the wave was expected to hit Elfin Cove at 1.55. Now as I see it there is a man sitting in an office being bored out of his skull in the middle of the night, expecting nothing to happen, and in a job that may well have had nothing happen as long as he has worked there. There is a significant earth quake, reported at 8.2, depth and length of fault area unknown. If he kicks it upstairs to his boss, who knows nothing of the situation, time passes, his boss covers his a**, and nothing is done. I guess the results were about as expected, but if it would have generated a 50 + foot wave and you were in the 1 to 2 hour warning area, you probably would of died. The situation in Hawaii also indicates that if there is a real warning, there probably isn't anything you can do anyway. I have not been there, but some of the small villages in rural Alaska seem to be located on bays or inlet in order to have boat deliveries and it doesn't look as if there is any where to run. As always, it is better to be lucky than good.
Glad to see that it worked out well for all of you.

Reminds me of those radar guys in Pearl Harbor in 42. Or all the folks who believe in Global warming, Yet the weather people can't predict weather past a day or so. Glad you didn't have to deal with anything major. I have been to that Mayon volcano that went off. I guess the whole ring of fire is very active.

Sadly, the more we push for technology in our lives, the more likely it will fail us! As the powers that be keep expanding the "reach" of technology, the more prone it is to failure when needed most! Good old fashioned seat of the pants feelings might not be scientifically accurate, but it may be more reliable then what we seem to currently rely on! Sorry for all those effected by this, but it's better to react to a potential threat that does not appear, then to have no warning at all and then complain that more could/should have been done!

DKR, remember you have to be alive to bitch about things so that alone puts you way ahead of the game. I am very glad that it turned out ok, old USAF crash investigation lore, if the pilots last words were, Mother, God, What the He**, etc it was equipment failure, if they were fu**, sh**, or other curse it was pilot error. It is much better to be awakened by someone yelling wolf and have nothing happen, then being awakened by the wolf chewing on your leg.
Now the real after action report details, always remembering OPSEC of course, for those of you that were involved in this "potential" SHTF event, what would have happened if a 100 foot wall of water came into your area and you, by the Grace of God or good luck, managed to get up to 120 feet and survive or were located at 120 feet. With all your preps below 100 feet gone, your perfect bug out location in remote Alaska totally destroyed, your lifetime investment in creating a stable self sufficient means of employment on it way to Japan on the out going tide. the bay full of debris, the landing strip full of trees, maybe a dead whale or two, and cut in half by a newly formed river bed, the whole world's attention focused on the thousands dead and 10s of thousands stranded in the populated areas and you so far down the disaster chain that it might be days before anyone even looks to see if you are alive. Now just to make it more realistic, it would seem using Elfin Bay data, that with a population of around 30, temps at freezing, about 8 hours of daylight, and at least some people living at around 200 feet above sea level, you might be able to go to a neighbor that was above the water level and hope that he tolerates refugees or hopefully have family that didn't have any damage.

The other extreme would be Barrow with a temp of 15 below, 1 hour of daylight, 4,000 people, no road out of the area and an elevation of 10 to 30 or so feet. Wouldn't list that real high in my list for my long term survival, but historically it is one of the older permanent settlements in North America. We humans can be very persistent.
