Way back when I bought a FAL kit and Imbel receiver and thought I'd built up my knowledge to where I could build one. But in '06 I got sick pretty bad and it pretty much erased my memory and now I can't tell one part from another. Now boredome has got me assembling all the tools I bought for this and while I can't find them all I found enough to do the job I think. Here I've removed the old receiver stub (that was fun) and installed the barrel. More fun there as I had to file a 1 1/16" wrench to fit the barrel and then file the barrel shoulder so it'd time right. Whew! taser1 Now I'm putting in a .264 locking shoulder, and I had to drive this thing in. I maean DRIVE it in! The side with the tab still barely sticks up above the hole - does this have to be flush? Thanks for some help!
I think I'm screwed until I get more parts - all I can find for replacement parts is the trigger control group and a cocking lever. I don't even have a pin to hold the upper and lower together!
Don How did you arrive at the .264 locking shoulder with out the bolt to head space it? What is it you need help with ? Ive built these. I have a book on it if you would like it I would send it to you?
I have a book, that's how I got as far as I am. LOL I thought I'd try that locking shoulder with my GO NO-GO guages and see which way to go from there, probably screwed up. I am missing parts and just ordered some like the pin to hold the two halves together and the gas tube. I need someone to do this while I watch so I don't blow myself up!
LOL nahh your ok, just make sure you use the bolt and pin gage and two fingers pressure on the bolt until it drops in place, then check head space if you have the book then you cant go wrong. Some like it a tad tight for break in, and some like it just right, I went with a tad tight. Have you checked out the Fal Files? they have great resource info there on building fals.
I forgot about the pin gages! Doh! I wondered what those were for. My book stated that .263 was the most common shoulder pin that gave the correct headspace and .264 was the smallest I had so I went with it. Seems to be OK but I have to check it some more and then have a gunsmith check it!
Don, I've got a set of go/no-go, pin gauges, and a spare bolt I can lend you. if you need. Got a barrel wrench too and one of those handy little tools for getting the main-spring in.
I knocked out the shoulder I put in and used the pin gauges and it showed .264 as where the GO gauge fit and the NO-GO didn't. So I hammer the .264 shoulder back in and a dummy round seats but the GO gauge doesn't, that I can tell anyway. Should I take the extractor off? That thing is a PIA for doing this!
Alright, now I took the firing pin out and the extractor off of the bolt and tried it using nothing but the stripped bolt. The GO gauge seated and the no-go did not. I still don't think I have all the parts for this. Did the mag release come with the kit?
