Keeping your BOL secure to the best possible extent

I went looking at some small land parcels today, and found a couple of promising places for a cheaply owned BOL. I can pay cash and then put down a prefab cabin in a few months. The area in which I found these places is about a 90 minute drive from where I currently reside. As I was driving home, the thought of how I would keep my BOL and its associated stockpile safe from theft occurred to me. The only reasonable thing I could think of was burial; possibly digging a hole, lining it with plastic sheeting, dropping in a section of culvert pipe, then putting in my stuff and covering it up. As for the cabin, probably just installing an extra hasp on the door and boarding up the windows.

Where this location is, it's mostly good-natured people like all of us here, but there's always that outside chance, especially since I'm not going to be living there, and possibly moving farther away in a couple years. Just wanted to see what everyone thinks.

The parcel I have made up my mind about is really great. 4.2 acres of hardwood forest with a small pond, bordered on two sides by national forest. Only drawback is that it's directly on a two-lane blacktop with a fair share of traffic, but it's cheap and the dollar is deciding how far I can go with this.

 

I know a guy who just put up an electric fence and posted beware of bull signs. Hey what ever works.

Very, very true.

Checking out a couple more closer to home tomorrow. The common denominator of all these parcels is that they are all raw land. The clearings I've found are just there and will need a little chainsaw prep as they are. Apart from that, some serious brush clearing will be in order if I want to get a cabin in away from the road.

 

........"Go anywhere's you want mister, but stay out of that there field"," I AM A FEDERAL OFFICER, AND THIS BADGE SAYS I CAN GO ANYWHERE I PLEASE!" he climbs the fence and heads across the field only to become the target of the farmer's bull! he charges back across the field with that bull right on his heels, and the farmer yells "SHOW HIM YOUR BADGE!!!!!!"

 

So maybe my thinking has been limited....my hang-up is delivery of the materials for the cabin. A truck would only be able to back in a couple meters from the road. Would the materials lend well to just being hauled back into the woodline by hand? Sounds like I need to pay a visit to the portable building folks tomorrow.

 

Also, as I stood on this parcel today, I tried to put OCOKA to work for me, but given the rural nature of the area, I think that a more likely scenario is one of holing up and waiting for whatever to blow over. Defense is still a necessity, of course, and the terrain is a down slope going back from the road. So, not a good picture. Going back to the secure/cheap/good dilemma lol......

 

There's no problem that the judicious use of high explosives will not fix.

As for keeping it secure when you're not around...The more secure you make, the more intrigued a thief will be, and the more they will tear up wanting to find out what's inside.

As stated above, don't leave anything valuable where it can be gotten to. Stashes and caches for survival gear, bring the rest with you when you visit.

 

That's pretty solid logic, so boarding up windows and doors might be counterproductive. Do you think four-strand cattle fence would work against me? I suppose I would put up with a broken window or two; gotta pay to play.

I wish a conex were an option for me, but after shopping around yesterday, the cheapest one I could find was $3500. Looks like I'll be doing what you said; caching some, probably in a few places, which is good sense anyway, and toting the balance with me.

I'd consider a surplus GP small or outfitters tent with a stove. Cabin may still make sense, but you could cache the tent or bring it with you when needed to occupy the BOL, plus you could take with with you if you had to head somewhere else. I'd preposition what I could in buried barrels. Another option is to preposition some stuff in a storage unit more proximal to the BOL. Just a few thoughts.

 

Consider a block building with a Steel roof.... leave the windows out but store them in the eves of the house out of sight... same with the door.... It's an abandoned/unfinished building but a couple of hours of work and you have a usable building with windows and doors....

 

Misdirection. Build that block building, with no windows facing the street, Have power dropped to it. And label then door "dangerous/high voltage/ keep out" and add whatever statute code the power company uses on their signs. It will be thought to be a substation, or power node.(a power backup for when the grid goes down)

 

hell just buy an old travel trailer and bring it with u when u go there ...
