Well, from the way it's looking, the wife and I will put off our purchase of retreat land until the kids are out of the house (~5 years or so) then live there full time.

So where's a good place to buy?

I know Rawles has a list, but most of those places are COLD (Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, etc.).

    Me no likey cold.

Any warm climates that would make a good retreat area?

    Thanks in advance.

Warm vs Cold is often relative to what you are used to now. Where do you live (generally)?

I'm in NC. Climate is great.
Cost, population and politics - not so much.

Also a TON of military bases. Not good.

Southern Colorado. Northern New Mexico. Much lower humidity than you're used to. No major population centers south of Pueblo. The area around Las Vegas, NM is pretty. Red Dawn was filmed in the are. The Santa Fe National Forest is near. Santa Fe, NM is also a great community and a reasonable drive to Albuquerque for shopping.

You might be onto something Byte. A bit cooler than I like, but sounds nice overall.

Rawles has a profile of a CR retreat on his site. Sounds nice, but land cost is outrageous.

Not really. I have friends that live there already and have been for years....They bought their 2nd piece for under $17K...and it's a beautiful piece of property, and far enough away....but close enough if they have to get to a town....

It helps to know someone already there....

I'm all for leaving the states but generally you will find this:
Small, Prosperous, Easy Immigration -- Pick 2

In states? Sounds like you want the SW: Colorado as a corner and then draw a line south and west, cutting carefully around the state of Colorado.

Don't think of the NW as necessarily cold, I left TN for WA and OR and have found the winters here quite pleasant. Was 55 degrees here today. The low humidity works both ways, hot & cold.

Best to take a scouting mission first.

Not sure, maybe the 4 corners region?
I am NOT in a great location, but I have all 4 seasons, rain and snow right now, in Northwest Az.
I researched Utah, New mexico, and lower part of Colorado....
Decide to buy 150 m iles from Phoenix....surrounded by mountains, and in the middle of nowhere!
No one wants to go up there, hi desert and all that!
But it was more than reasonable @ $8k for 4.5 acres...dang few neighbors!
'cept that dang big cat is BACK!
(anyone know if catnip has an effect on the really big guys?)
It all depends on where you can grow food or at least have some ranch abilities, I think....
    IMHO

well i really have no idea, but this thought popped into my head.... would you really want to do that anyway!?? i have seen how crazy small cats can get on catnip.... so would'nt dosing a 175-190 pound cat be sorta like feeding a grizzly bear LSD and then poking him in the rump with a cattle prod. ya just don't know what the result will be, but the possibilites could truly be horrific.seesaw

lol, at this rate, there might not be any warm states left in the States in 5 years!

If you don't mind dry, W TX is awesome if ya ain't trying to have a job, which if you'll be retired, then that wouldn't be an issue...very relaxed area and land is abundant and cheap as hell.
