Let there be heat.

Been a while since I have posted anything :) Things have just been crazy busy here trying to get buildings built and add ons added. The last of the projects I dreaded doing got done a couple of days ago. This is the BIG wood stove I bought to heat the new house I was building on the old farm. I decided that for how much it cost that I would be bringing all 400 pounds of it to the New Place LOL. The wood stove that the cabin fire place had been converted to was a 1992ish model Voglezang a great little old wood stove by any measure but not really big enough to heat the cabin as a stand alone and very low efficiency and short burn times of 3 hours max. At the same time the fire place was converted the owner of the cabin back then put a 20' 6" diameter length of iron oil field pipe down the chimney and secured in very well. Looks like he dropped it in right down on to old Voglezangs exhaust hole. It was quite the job wrestling the old stove out without breaking the cast iron.

Finally got it out and took my measurements to get the new stove in. Had to lay in the fire place with the side grinder cutting off 6.5 inches of the oilfield pipe........ Not a pleasant job LOL. Got the new stove up on the hearth and pushed it back into the hole and it misses the pipe by 32nd of a inch. I made a collar out of black stove pipe to put around it and then used 6 self tappers to hold it all tight. It sticks out of the hole 14 inches leaving room for me to use the front part as a cook top.

I have never ran a modern high efficiency catalytic stove before so there has been a learning curve in figuring out the air flow and wood feeding but after a few days of tinkering with it I have it pretty much fine tuned. And keeping the Cabin a steady 75 degree in the main cabin and a consistent 65 in the 14x30 add on I built. Been running 15 to 20 degrees overnights. So it was a good time to install it and get it figured out and test it. LOL I had to take the pedestal and ash box off in order for it to fit and weld some pegs onto the bottom to give it a few inches of clearance on the bottom. Now I just need to clean up the big cluttered mess I made on the hearth :) I am very happy with the new stove it is rated at 85% efficient and runs 12 hours on a slow burn 30 pound wood load before the inside temp starts creeping down.

Love the stove, wish we had one for the rare times we need the extra heat.
Also love that square cast iron pan.

I like that square one a lot myself it reserved solely for pancakes and biscuits in the oven. Round to the left Biscuits and Cornbread only. Round flat to the right is a new Lodge that is OK but not nearly as good of quality as the old big square lodge one.

I had a HUGE list of things I wanted to get done here before winter in the bigger and mid size projects. That Stonewall, big hearth and fireplace was one of the two big things that pushed this place over the edge to me buying here instead of the place I was ready to pull the trigger on in TN. I knew at first sight that big new wood stove I bought for the old places new house would need to go in that hole.

Other big over the edge feature was the front porch :)

The Day I closed on it with just the cabin and the old barn here back in June.

I have built a few buildings and the Rabbit Add on to the old barn, the cabin add on and behind the Red and Brown Chicken house there is a Duck House and Duck Pond.

The Rabbit addition to the old barn. While I was at it I lifted the wall of the old barn up and put four new 4x4s in it to take that sag in the roof out.
    542689010_24804795029115339_1569024266279689009_n.

The Rabbit addition was the first thing we built. Lorrie came with 20 of her breeder rabbits and we couldn't leave the cages on the ground for very long. Literally build the 14x28 add on around the rabbits on the cage base frames. Think we are up to like 70 rabbits now LOL.
    518327146_122098246910945718_7921347799489391066_n.

The Cabin add on is the same size as the rabbit add on at 14'x28' had to decide whether to come off the roof and have more pitch and a higher ceiling or come off under the eaves of the cabin and have a lot less pitch and 6' 6" ceiling. In the end I decided on a lower ceiling and only 3" of pitch on the roof. Lorrie looked at me like I was insane when I started the chainsaw and cut the brand new framed door top off so it would fit LOL. Yeah Olaf is that big :) That add on is sealed up tighter than a frogs but and insulated top to bottom with R20. Has a 14x8 pantry on the back end, 20 feet of counter, cabinets and my big propane canning stove on the outside wall. Shelves Washer and dryer and two chest freezers on the inside wall.

Kind of a mess and everything is dusty from sitting in the old barn for 4 Months. The folks that bought the old farm didn't want the range and cabinets in my old cabin so I moved them here and put them in the add on.
    577119016_25390082507253252_3523398118566456962_n.

I didn't build the new barn, what would have taken me a month or more to do myself the non english speaking crew had up in a day and a half. I sure did move a lot of dirt raise that slope up and out 50 feet into the valley floor though.

It is not a huge barn but 24x60x8 on the eaves meets my new needs and then some. I had the Electric service upgraded to a 400amp from the 200amp and a 4 loop box put on. Have to do a 180' trench from the Service box to the new barn next year. Then feed off of it to the old barn and the Chicken House. No matter how I did it upgrading the old service or adding a second service and a 3nd electric bill by getting 40 feet closer off of another pole....... the electric to the new barn just was not going to get done this year.
    549778095_24934169026177938_5250155076474470386_n.

Next year I fully intend to spend a lot more time playing in my creek than on a tractor seat or shooting nails :)

WOW! I love that rock wall!!! Did you do that?

I have a wood stove, not one of the new '85% efficient' as bought it right before the mandate went through. I've heard they are excellent and have given thought to buying a new one...even though there is nothing wrong with the this one except...How in hell do you manage to keep it a 'steady 75 degrees'???? My woodstove blows us out of the house as it's impossible to keep it a constant temperature and sooner as later it's up to 80F+. I have to assume there is something I don't know about these new woodstoves...

    The place looks magnificent!

I gotta admit I don't fully understand how the Catalytic functions But it comes down to the primary airflow and the secondary air flow being adjusted and tweaked to keep the burn slow and the gasses released burning up top. I do know I put the recommended 32 pounds of of wood in at 4:30am this morning and at 5:50PM the propane furnace kicked on when the house temp dropped to 68. It is just a steady slow consistent burn. It also helps that whomever did it before I bought it..... went total overkill on the insulation LOL there is like 18" of mineral wool in the attic. So once it is warm or cool in here it hold a good long while and setting the stove to a very slow burn just maintains that 74-76 zone. When the furnace kicks on that is my Que to reload it. After 3 days burning there are almost no ashed in the bottom or left over charcoal.

Draw back to this stove is if it is not well seasoned and under 20% moisture it is not very efficient and will smoke itself out. So no cheating and cutting corners and trying to burn wood that is not quite dried down enough in these stoves.
