This sounds pretty bad. I knew one failed this morning and from the footage I saw, It had already done a lot of flooding to parts. The 'Old City" was built on the higher ground. the rest is a sitting duck. I feel for those that are loosing everything
Are they failing because of the beating they took during the hurricane or are other things involved?.....
not sure. spotty coverage now that it's dark. The hospital at Tulane is seeing an Inch rise every 10 minutes right now. I think that all the water that is heading my way, TN, is flowing down the mississppi and putting extra strain on them. The levies were 'breached' earlier and I think that means that water is flowing over them. thusthe extra stress and breakage. It's not over
No i can't. The word on the last levy fail is that it is a 2 block long breech. My guys are going to be out of work during this rain. I'm thinking of heading down to NO. Just to see it. A CAT 5 would have knocked some shit over.
Actually, as bad is it was, it could have been a lot, lot worse. If the hurricane would have hit to the west instead of the east, it would have been a lot, lot worse.
The breaching just simply means that the gulf can get in unrestricted. The holes have to be plugged before they can pump out the city. It will take a while. The pumps will not keep up with a hole that big. I am not too sure, but I think the breaches were caused by the surge overtopping the levees and just scrubbing the tops off. Well, we're under a tornado watch here. There is a warning issued just to the west. Somehow, I can't get too excited about nawlins right this minute.
I've been watching this today.... first it was 200 ft then 300ft... now I just read that they are abandoning the sandbagging efforts to plug it and expect the pumps to fail soon
I'm a compassionate guy, especially during times like this. But I can't help but wonder how the rescue workers, National Gaurd, etc feel about helping the poor, less fortunate , victims who REFUSED the order to evacuate... I heard tonight that these 'victims' were caught by surprise...wth? I knew about the incoming hellstorm. People make choices in times like this. If I were ordered to evac an area, I might refuse. But I'd be humble as hell when they had to risk their lives to rescue me.
Do not forget that some of these victims are elderly who yes probably were caught by surprise - they live in nursing homes - do you think they actually read a paper or comprehend the news - if they even watch it? You'd be amazed how many don't melbo. In the New Orleans area there are an immense population of homeless. They don't have the ability to pack up and leave like most. Most probably don't even know what the news is, let alone read it. Don't get me wrong there were quite a few who knew in advance and had the ability and could evacuate easily. I have little sympathy for them. There were many who had no way to leave the area. For those I have all the sympathy in the world.
I guess I was mostly referring to those I saw in the attics of thier homes...or on the rooftops of their homes. As far as the real 'less fortunate', we MUST do whatever we can to help them...
We don't openly question it. We know that with anything like this, there is going to be those that won't leave to protect their belongings and those opportunitst scum that are waiting to steal everyone blind whent they are gone. If my only Med Acft was operational, I would be gone right now. You don't ask, you just do.
