For me, that is a Taurus G2 series that I have in a 9mm and a 40 S&W. These are the only Glock style weapons I have because they incorporate a manual safety feature.

Well, how about caliber ... kinda important. next would be semi-auto or revolver. after that would be how are you going to carry it? Pocket? Inside the waist band? Outside the waist band? Or are you going to rock it in a shoulder holster or a bag?

Also, not making any assumptions but how is your grip strength? Any physical limitations on gripping the fire arm or racking the slide due to injury or age?

Oh so many things go into the Best 'fill in the blank'

A Derringer. Seriously. Lots of variables about what you need and are comfortable with.

In a semi auto i vary between this 380 and a Nighthawk 9mm. For woods use its a long 357 or 45lc due to our bears, hogs and gators

aardbewoner judge a human on how he act,not on look and talk.

The best gun is the one that goes BANG after you pull the trigger :)
And then come the next most important in play, hitting what you want.

My wife likes the Springfield XD's.

My preference is Glock 43x for everyday carry.

"best" handgun is VERY subjective. For light & small I have a Diamondback DB9.
I've not shot any of the Canik's, heard they are good but have no experience with them

I usually carry a flavor of Glock, either 17,21SF, or 42, depending on occasion and level of dress, but if I know I may be somewhere sketchy it's a Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 Special. I used to have an S&W .41 magnum, got rid of it because of the 4" barrel. I am a Glock guy, but if I only got to have 1 handgun, it would be a revolver. They always go bang when you pull the trigger.

1911 from Wilson or Nighthawk in .45 - BUT - My wrist will only take an auto in 9mm and I’m old enough to still think of them as baby bullets (I know they’ve improved but,,, ) so back to wheel guns. 3” 586 L comp or 2” Colt Detective special with a J frame bringing up the tail end.

Yeah, it's very subjective and depends on your body type and lifestyle. Can't go wrong with Springfield, Ruger, and S&W these days though.

Lots of folks like the S&W Body Guard II
another is the S&W Shield, both are very well made and near perfect for compact discrete carry use!

For me, a compact is not as big a concern as it is for many, but I do address it a couple different ways.
I carry a CZ-82 most of the time, it's 12 +1 capacity is more than adequate, and despite being a tiny bit less powerful than full pop 9X19, still a good all around performer! The biggest reason I choose this, it was designed right from the beginning to be a concealed carry pistol, so it's super slick, no sharp lines or edges, and it uses the Walther type action, direct blowback, so it's super accurate and easy to shoot, AND, with it's superior double action trigger, I carry cocked and locked hammer down with the safety OFF, and run it in double action only ( Just like the Beretta M-9/92 series) so it's lightning quick on the draw and first shot on target!
For higher capacity and more power, either the Beretta Brigadier ( Which is basically an officer's size M-9 ) with it's 16+1 capacity of full pop 9X19, gets the job done is good form. Lastly, My personal fav, a Para Ordinance Warthog 9X19 double stack 1911 compact, 16+1 capacity, the ability to reliably handle +p ammo all the time, and it's superior accuracy makes it a no brainer, a major plus is the instinctive manual of arms!
