My question, is there a meaningful substitute for the .50 cal rifles that are so wildly popular? Is there something of a lesser caliber that can send out a medium to large caliber slug to long ranges with good accuracy? I know that the fifty is very hard to match much less beat, but hopefully, there are some options. jim
The .300 win mag or the .338 is about as good as it gets until you get to a .50. There are some other rifles out there, but nothing that many can afford. The great thing about a .50 is that being military, the rounds are numerous and relatively cheap to come by.

Target shooting, hunting, what? Not a flame, but it would help some steer you in the direction that you are hoping to reach. phishi
Nothing can touch the .50, but the .300 and .338 are pretty potent. Check out this thread: http://survivalmonkey.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1495
.300 WIn Mag with a 180 or 190 grain bullet is still hard to beat way out there where bullets don't expand.
Thanks gents. I am basically looking for a toy to shoot at long ranges, but perhaps also to kill a deer out past the ranges I normally shoot them. A friend told me about the .378 Weatherby Mag. and he thinks that a Barnes X bullet in spire point might be what I'm looking for if such a slug exists. Those .338's sound good, and I'd been thinking that the .300 Win Mag. was the most bang for the buck around. jim
The .416 is supposed to out-perform the .50, and this from a guy I met that loads rounds for a living. They shoot alot doing testing and loves that round.
The .50 FMJ remanufactured rouns run form a $1.30 to $1.70. I "heard" that the .416 run in the neighborhood of $2.50 to $3.00 a round. Even the $1.50 rounds that I shoot, I shoot sparingly, hence why I bought a bolt and not a auto loader.
