we are putting up alot of food and supplies. we are wondering if anyone has experience with storing multiple food items in small vacuum bags and then storing them all in mylar with absorbers in 5 gallon buckets. this would be handy for opening one bucket and having the variety available for a short period of time without worry of going bad after opening. would also be real handy for grabbing in bug out situations so you had a variety of food instead of 5 gallons of rice. we have a chamber vac and were thinking of using that for smaller packages then putting in mylar in buckets. Thanks for any replies.
I'm not quite sure I understand. Are you going to vacuum seal different items and place them all in one mylar bag? The only issue I could see is wasted space. The advantage of rice in mylar in bucket is that there is very little wasted space using the same product. I would like to use smaller mylar bags for smaller portions, but its tough to seal a small bag formed to the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. I like the idea, though. If you can only grab 1-2 buckets, you are a lot better off than if you grab 1-2 buckets of rice. Good BO plan IMHO. Maybe someone else will have some ideas / experience on this.
Yes different food items in separate bags, then place those vacuum sealed bags in a mylar with oxy absorbers. I assume i will lose some capacity but think it will be minimal. I have a large cold storage and lots of buckets. another plus to doing some this way is the ability to give buckets to people in need so they have a more rounded group of food in one bucket. we plan to help others and not just plan for ourselves. Just a thought...why does it have to be formed to a layer of the bucket? What about a number of long thinner bags that fit together standing vertically in the bucket?
Good point. It might still waste some space, but less than making "cubes" and then trying to stack in a round hole.
How about putting all your sealed bags in vertically as was suggested earlier, and then filling the bucket with Rice, or Grain, that can fill in all the spaces in between the sealed bags, right on up to the top. Then all you need to do is flood the whole bucket with Nitrogen Gas to displace the air, and seal it, Gas Tight. No wasted space, and no Oxygen, because all the air was displaced by the Nitrogen Gas. sounds good to "Me".....
