    As is often the case, the most important reminder of what really is true was found today not on Fox News or a blog, but in the memes. Thanks to hot diggity for the meme post.

    The Declaration of Independence states that the Kings rules have taken away the rights of the individuals given to them by God and that the people have a right to create another system. It does not state that the state governments have any rights, it is the people.


    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

    Then after the war was won a new government was set up as a union of states. It operated under the Articles of Confederation from 1781 to 1787. It gave all of the power to the individual states and just didn't work. To remedy the weakness of the existing government, a new government needed to be established. Given the failures of the earlier systems, royal and confederation, a new stronger national government needed to be established. This lead to the convention that drafted the Constitution. Its only purpose was to establish a new central government, lay out how the power of the state was to be organized, and to limit those powers. I may be wrong, but in my readings, I have never seen any references to limiting the rights of the individual. It is my view that it was expected that the states would establish a set of laws to rule in their state, but that those rights were limited and the individuals safety was assured by Constitution and the national government.

    The first 3 words in the Constitution define who has the power to create it and who is designed to protect.

    OF THE
    UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
    We the People of the United States, in Order to form
    a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domes-
    tic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, pro-
    mote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of
    Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and
    establish this Constitution for the United States of
    America

    The founders were afraid of the power being taken from the people and given to some group and many of the early leaders stated that they believed that a fair government had been established and that their only doubts were that the people would not be able to keep it. They also stated that it would not work if the people were not of a unified mind in supporting it. They had no idea of a system of political parties who could unite the voters to over ride the built in checks and balances. The system was set up to prevent the government from being controlled by the states or an organized group . They did not see that using the power of the government to award benefits could be used as a method of securing votes and thus control, or of an ideological system being used to unite groups and thus gain control.

    We as individuals have lost many of the rights that were to be safeguarded by the Constitution and the very system of checks and balances is in danger. Next election and every one after it counts. We no longer have the society and morals that created the system. The events that are happening in some areas, New York city, Chicago, etc, have suggested that minority rights, although protected by the Constitution, may be infringed. There are organized groups that want to take those changes to the national level.

    Yes, that was one of the founders greatest fears, the tyranny of the majority over the minority. Their greatest fear was that of a democracy, or as often stated a majority vote of 2 wolves and one sheep as to what was going to be supper tonight. That is their fierce determination to create a republic, not a democracy.

    Typically, a republic is led by an elected head of state, often a president, and may feature a separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. This structure allows for checks and balances to prevent any single branch from overpowering the others. The role of citizens in a republic varies depending on its specific system, with democratic republics empowering the public to influence governance through elections. Yet, the effectiveness of citizen participation can be hindered by dominant political parties that limit competition and public influence. Overall, the republican system is designed to ensure that political power resides with the people, promoting leadership that aligns with the broader interests of society.
