I imagine that drinking too much too fast could affect one's electrolyte balance but I'm not sure. A gallon doesn't seem like that much - I probably drink close to that every 24 hrs

Yes, we are constantly warned about this. The Army is refining it's approach to water overhydration. What happens is that to much water in to short a time frame will remove the electrolyes from your body and throw you into shock. If sever enough, it can kill you. We are now taught to temper our drinking with Gatorade or something like it. That is why Gatorade is given out freeley here. I carry two bottles with me on every flight, you can never have to much Gatorade, or large mouth plastic bottles when you are flying!

Well I'll be. I have heard it's possible, just didn't hear of anyone actually doing it. I was taught about this too. I was taught that if you are properly hydrated, you should be urinating frequently. The color should be clear though some foods can color it. And if it isn't clear, then you are dehydrated. Now this also brings up a question I have about the amount of sodium in the gatorade. Too much sodium will raise BP and can cause headaches and other wonderful side affects. So too, moderation, I guess is key.

That is why we drink it three to one, or at least that is what they teach, not everyone abides by that.

Yep...when I was still nursing, but getting out of it ..I managed a Weight Loss Center for a Natl chain...and had to warn people constantly about drinking too much water, too fast......It can , and does, kill people.....

People got on the weight loss kick, and lost weight fast ...and figured the water was the key..and tended to overdo it...I had to rein them in from that, and so many other things...

It's not always about how much you drink...but how fast you drink it...It pulls the sodium...dilutes it , if you will...electrolyte imbalance, and so many things go on....It's not common..but it can happen..

If it is being drank, even in prety hefty quantities, for hydration then the sodium in gatorade isnt really a problem. It has a lot in it BUT if it is being drank for hydration (i.e. you are doing lots of sweating) and especialy if done with water in between bottles, then you will be looseing so much sodium in your sweat that it HAS to be replaced. You can drink all the water you want and still suffer most of the effects of dehydration if you dont replace the electrolytes (sodium is a big part of that) and thats where the gatorade comes in. I know I sweat so much when working labor in the summer that if I dont drink at LEAST a half gallon to a gallon of gatorade/day along with a couple gallons of waters I get bad cramps and such from electrolytes being low, the one way I can go without the gatorade is by eating LOADS of salt on my food and or straight from the shaker to help keep the stuff balanced. Then too by the end of a normal days work in the summer, when my clothes dry they all have a glittery white crust on them from all the salt I lose in sweat.
