Also, in the event that the overhead bins are full you can place a soft-sided bag or backpack under the seat in front of you, provided that they are small enough. I heard a few announcements telling passengers that they would HAVE to check their carry-on bags as they were running out of room in the overhead compartments, thankfully none were for my flights.

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

I travel in hey dudes shoes, cargo shorts, and a t-shirt.

    Carry on:

I 100% agree on the dirty clothes bag.
Socks and baby wipes are a must.
Duplicate chargers for all the electronics.
    A lighter to make fire.
    Headlamp.
    A few hundred dollars cash.
Laptop, phone, other crap you need for work if all the check baggage disappeared for a week.
    A light jacket.
    Sweat pants.
    Hiking boots.
    Watch cap.
    Toothbrush and toothpaste.

    Check baggage:

Clothes, tools, toiletries, all the normal stuff.

Gamcha rolls up to the size of a soda can, but is a full size towel that dries really fast. And in a pinch, I can wear it.

Here's the gamcha info I posted before: Shemagh vs gamcha

When NxN was around, I bought their wool kerchief. One of those lives in my backpack. I have it rolled up in a large ziplock. That goes to the bottom of my laptop sleeve since the bottom is not padded. And I have busted it out when I got cold. And used little red riding hood style in the rain as well as when it is a little cold. A hood and cape configuration.
