for changing from windows due to the bullshit windows 11 crap forcing you to buy a new computer or buy their extended protection which the to want to make as difficult as possible... and still retain some windows games n shit.. please advise...
i like linux mint. most linux flavors gave a "run live" mode, you boot your computer to a usb with linux and try it out before installing, its a little slower that way. try mint with librewolf web browser. libre office covers office apps. its free. Linux Will Work For You. Time to Dump Windows 10. And Don't Bother with Windows 11
There's always a way to make anything work in a Linux distro. Thing is, I strongly dislike trying to play games in Linux that are typically streaming for Windows, like Steam games. You could run Wine or whatever other crap that never works well, or just dual boot. If you had to swap, just try a Linux install and see if you like it. 1. Goto: Home - Linux Mint and follow the instructions. -or- 2. Install Etcher and create your own bootable SD card or USB: balenaEtcher - Flash OS images to SD cards & USB drives You can run any Linux OS live on CD or from a USB or SD card without installing. When you're ready to install, it even allows you to opt for dual-boot so you can keep your Windblows installation if you prefer.
I've recently (as in the past year) been preparing getting my aging dad prepared to say goodbye to windows. I've tried the following distributions Mint, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Kali, Parrot, Suse, Fedora and Arch. My favorites for a replacement for a windows desktop would be in: First place Mint Second place Kubuntu Third place Ubuntu. This is based on ease of use, and ability to make it feel like windows. My dad got Kubuntu with the Plasma desktop because it supported his printer and his document scanner. I would have preferred he run Mint but ya know those old people, gotta print out everything from photos to emails from the doctor. I've set up Linux Mint for main family system. Currently running windows 10 laptop as I type but prepping to set up a brand new laptop with Win11 as the job that pays the bills is a DotNet shop so I ain't jumping through the hoops to code and debug windows apps on Linux. I do run JetsonOS, Kali, Ubuntu and Parrot, Raspbian Linux distros on many of my other machines but those are specialized for other purposes just my 2 cents.
I just checked on an old Linux Mint install, decided to update a little bit and broke it with the synaptic installer utility. Silly me, got too bold and sure of myself and went into Terminal and tried fixing it. Messed up my kernel, reverted and rebooted. No problem. Then decided to upgrade to the latest Mint. Got to do it manually, okay no problem...I waited too long. So, I downloaded my favorite Mint distro (XFCE) and checked the sum, no problems. I flashed the .iso to my usb with Balena Etcher, popped it in and away I went. Started the boot and migrated files over to another location, now reinstalling. Mint 22.2 is sexy
My workplace decided to get rid of some desktops and laptops. They wipe the drives, so Mint Cinnamon gets installed! I have 1 Win11 machine that I run radio programs on, everything else around the place runs Mint.
I run an older box I put together a while back, and have 3 SSD's setup in a RAID configuration. I had to go in on the live install and run GParted, unmounted all the SSD's and deleted the partitions so it was all unallocated. I remember doing this a long time ago, it's best to avoid errors, but only on the drive you intend to install. I'm just nuking everything this time around, I backed up what I needed. I am definitely installing an encrypted volume, always my go-to option. This means I will use a login to allow the drive to boot, then another login and password to access the system after it's unlocked. And I also chose the option to do a full disk erase beforehand, so the best security option...but it takes time. Awww isn't he so cute?
I've gone small form factor. This is Linux Mint 22.2 with a terabyte hard drive and 16 GB of RAM running at 3.6Ghz. 169 bucks. It came with Win11 preinstalled but i yanked that 1TB drive and swapped in a brand new SSD of same size. It has 4 usb ports, HDMI and DisplayPort for video, Wireless and wired network jack, audio and bluetooth. About all I need.
Yeah, I got to do something as tomorrow Windows 10 is no longer supported... I'm not even sure their Defender will be updated as heard conflicting tales...
Using MXlinux for years my x64 is a dualcore with 2gb ram and all runs smooth. I even run a MXlinux respin on two raspberry-pi 5,s one 2gb & 8 GB ram. There are even lighter linuxen, but remember that's only the shell around the kernel, what in essence linux is and for all flavors the same!
