I’ve been very interested in getting into xc skiing both for fun, exercise and hunting. I see people talking about the 3pin binding systems, has anyone tried the more universal style mounts that’s are on the market? The ones that claim to be able to secure your hunting boots to the ski? Seems like a good option to keep the same footwear and be able to use skis? Obviously not downhill.

So, to be clear, to most serious XC skiers, three-pin is considered obsolete. There’s a LOT of USED ski equipment out there though, using 3-pin bindings, so it’s still a realistic option. We use the universal bindings from Berwin. I’ve shown them in a couple of videos recently. I’m pretty happy with them, so far, for the reasons mentioned. If I need to drop my skis to set a trap, or to switch to crampons, or even just tooling around camp, I don’t need to switch boots. My hiking boots and my mukluks are also much more comfortable to wear than any hard plastic ski boot I’ve ever tried.

You can absolutely do downhill in a free-heel universal binding. You just need to know telemark techniques, and understand the limitations of the soft-side boots. Remember, skiing—even alpine—is hundreds, maybe thousands of years old, and plastic is less than a century old.
