Last month, to finish out the year 2024, I discussed my plan to focus, in 2025, on three specific areas of preparedness. Those three are: fieldcraft, home preparedness, and training. I haven’t spent a lot of time, the last two years or so, working on tactical training articles on here, because there’s a whole lot of guys out there, with more recent experience in combat, putting content out on the subject, and doing a pretty good job of it. That’s a dramatic change from when I first started blogging, way back in 2010/2011, when the only “tactical” information being put out in the preparedness sphere, was from either support branch guys who’d never served in combat, and were rehashing stuff they’d heard from Vietnam era guys, or were just making it up whole cloth, based on what they wanted to believe was relevant. Today, of course, the crossover between the preparedness sphere and the tactical training/shooting spheres are much greater, which is beneficial. There’s still some drawbacks though.

One of the biggest issue we face, in preparedness generally, is the institutional bias towards accepting US military doctrine as irrefutable gospel, ordained from on high. In at least one way, this makes a lot of sense. There’s a much greater chance that a combat arms veteran who served in the last twenty years, even if he never managed to deploy downrange1, has at least received his training directly from someone who did. Actual experience counts for a lot, when it comes to determining the validity of training tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Unfortunately, there’s also a significant drawback to it…
