I haven't tried, nor even handled one. That said, there has to be a reason Amazon has halved the price (like maybe no one is buying) and I think I can see at least one reason why it would be a failure as a camp tool; the head is too light to serve as an axe and that sharpened top edge looks like a real hazard (at least to me.) Now, maybe there's a use for it in hand to hand combat with a cutting edge and spiked end, but I see nothing more. There are other reviews out there that highly praise it for functions other than tactical, but I don't see them as giving the user more of an advantage than a good machete offers.

SK5 steel is pretty tough, this tomahawk is called the "Kangee", been out for a while now. It's non-traditional, which is why a lot of folks wouldn't like it, but there's some tactical thought that went into this. It is designed by RMJ who has been making Tomahawks for Special Forces Units serving around the world. The design is unique due to the top edge also serving as a cutting edge, and an all steel construction. It has a 6" long head, and the handle offers numerous hold patterns. It is balanced at about 4" from bottom of hawk along the handle, which is not bad. The kydex sheath is molle compatible and protects blade well. As far as throwing goes, I would say there are better tomahawks out there, but with practice you can be effective with it. It's not my cup-O'-tea as far as hawks go, but I can see the attraction for it.

I don't own one, but Sootch did a review on it about a year ago:

I bought this hatchet and have used it a little in the yard for cutting tree roots in the garden. I like the weight for carrying in my pack and I like the feel in my hand while swinging it. The blade stays pretty sharp considering I've been chopping through dirt and tree roots. I added a lanyard to the handle so I can slip my hand through the loop and it won't come out of my hand. The head does not have the weight that most other hatchets that I've used in the past and I would want to need to use this for creating a lot of fire wood. However, for light work, delimbing, or creating kindling, it's gonna be real handy. If I were going to be using this for any length of time, I'd be sure to wear gloves to project my hands from blisters, but that's just me being a sissy because I work in an office most of the time and my hands aren't conditioned to that kind of heave use.

I decided not to get the model with the spike on the back of the blade because I wanted the blunt end to use for hitting things and maybe drive an occasional nail. It'd be touch to use as a hammer because the blade is very narrow, but I think it could be done in a pinch. The face of the blade on my is the only part that is sharpened. The heal and top are blunted.

I paid too much for mine because I bought it from Optics Planet and they refused to cancel my order after I found it available online from other vendors for much cheaper. You can buy a plain hatchet for a lot cheaper that will do the same job but I decided that I wanted this one because it seemed a little lighter for carrying and has a nice Kydex head cover. I won't buy from Optics Planet any more because of how I was treated, but that's another whole story that gets pretty ugly. I'd recommend this hatchet for medium light use as well as a good tool for your BOB.

I found the CRKT was much sharper than Cold Steel and is more ergonomic as I can tell exactly, in the dark, how it is in my hand and where it will land.
Cold Steel tends to be more of a club to me and the round handle is not a good indicator of where the blade will hit, even if you wrap the handle with leather or parachute cord.

In the dark it does make a difference.

The American Tomahawk has flattened sides and at least you know where the sharp ends are even if you dont know if it is the spike or the blade.

    YMMV
