Well, I watched "apocalypse man" and was a bit diasppointed....
It had it's points, but so does barbed wire!
(found out today...OUCH...ripped thru a finger while hoisting a roll (1/4 mile long) into a basket!)
Meanwhile, I was wondering what on earth the film maker was thinking...It looked like some of those run down buildings in Michigan, but more like Louisiana, after Katrina!
No people, no dogs, nothing but vacant (long time) buildings....
Like I said it had points to it, but was not geared to be really interesting.
Now, following that, I tried to pay attention to the 2012 scenario which was on next, but strange....seems the best they had to offer was a couple of brothers that did some weird drugs to get their information (literally!)
    Too weird for me.

I DVR'd "Apocalypse man", and I was disappointed as well.

I knew the show wouldn't be that good when he started saying he had a "tire iron" and then pulled out a pry bar.

Here, lets put this damp cardboard over our fire to absorb the smoke. hmm, lets see, damp cardboard dries out due to the fire below it, then it catches fire. I did like the putting of the blocks around the fire, that would help direct heat where you want it.

Bicycle pump idea, ok, it might work, I'd have to try it first.

When he was making the bio-fuel, something didn't seem right. He was holding a bottle of what appeared to be HEAT (which is/used to be isopropyl alcohol) and says "this is the same stuff in your radiator". Also after mixing all the ingrediants I didn't see him separate the glycerin & fuel. I think water also has to separated if it is present as well. I just didn't like how he made it seem so simple to make, when he'd prolly be better of just filtering the used oil and pouring it straight in to the gas tank and pumping more of the diesel from the gas station.

Dunno, but I was not that impressed.
Oh and when he was breaking into the house "you have to be quick and quiet" then it takes him 3 tries to bust the door in.

I never said it was be great; I just said it was gonna be on tv..(guyz er hurtin my feelins)

Bicycle pump was a no go from the start, there has to be a check valve between the hose and cylinder otherwise when you draw the piston up it would suck air out of the bicycle tube...
Note toself: gotta check that today...
I caught on the "tire iron" thing right off too.
My biggest complaint came on a slightly deeper level:

He "fought" ( worked anyway) to get to through the sewers to get to the hospital because it had a backup genny.. then went out again and "fought"(exposed himself) to find diesel to power the genny for 4or5 hours...
Seems like the "need" for power ( which I question) was more dangerous than 4or5 hours of power was worth. same thing with the vehicle where was he going? Itfollowed the "Bear Grylls" format just doing stuff to show it can be done.

I did find anappreciation for a good flashlight and my folding wasr...I could see when/if scavenging trips like last night became necessary it would be real comforting around my cinderblock firepit. That,a prybar,a selfstarting siphon pump and hose. and a GOOD flashlight.

I watched "after apocolypse" and part of "apoc man" I didnt think it was bad. 1st it educates the masses to potential scenarios, people who don't think about the reality of a disaster in which no one is coming to help you.
The more people that are prepared to be self reliant the better off we all are. Less people panicking and looting, more people able to help themselves and others, co-operating. More people to work with to secure resources. People with other skill sets and assets.
I guess you could look at it negatively "Great, now everyone knows how to get fuel from underground tanks!" As far as the information provided, if I can glean a gem or 2 of knowledge sifting thru the sand (BS) is worth it.
Therefore I give both programs 2 thumbs up. Yes I feel sorry for the guy that thinks he can hot wire a car or make fuel from watching that. Hopefully tho someone having seen that is convinced they need to read up more on the subject. And not rely on that 1 program as their survival training. Oh yeah, and people that prep are not far out wacko's

Tango, nothing was directed at you, just the show. I guess any survival show is good if you learn something from it, and can use that knowledge later.

And, yes, when the show first started I thought the guy was trying to impersonate Bear Grylls (sp?)

as soon as he said, ok shtf I'm heading to the center of a major city I was like WTF!!
Why not walk down and find a bridge or a boat instead of risking your life swinging across a raised draw bridge? LOL Also there was no one else around, should have had him run into some thugs.

I noticed him saying before making the "biodiesel" "we don't have the proper mixing equipment, a centrifuge". which doesn't mix, it separates based on density. Also what he made wasn't BD none the less he could have just heated and filtered the fat and got just as far with that as with what he made. And that was some truck, 5 gallons of half refined oil will get him 100 miles.

About the first house, I was like great 1st he's teaching people to break into homes and how did he know no one was home? I was like as soon as he busted through the door. I said, "BOOM! shotgun blast end of show. "

Also How did he get the tape recorder to rewind itself to continue broadcasting?

A few good bits of info but more entertaining though. He should have stayed there longer, heck he made a home base and never really used it.

Don't forget the using of the elevator shaft to exit the building. I was like, yeah, either your going to get metal shavings in your legs and hands or you'll loose your grip and fall, breaking a leg, your back, an arm, etc.

I do have to admit it was a bit entertaining, just to a lesser degree than I'd hoped.
I was surprised at hearing my own vocalized responses to no one in the room but the cat and the TV! ( I do that a lot with "Survivorman" and "Man-vs-wild" too!)
There was a lot of "fluff" that really would more than likely not work....For most people, especially in a stressful period of survival.
But all in all, I managed to stay awake thru it and was left looking for a snack afterwards!
My biggest concern over the whole of it, was the going into a city area....But thern again, it was desolate.
By the time all the people had left an area, nearly every single usuable item would have been long since removed, and you'd probably be hard pressed to find much of anything at all, much less canned foods!
Yeah. It reminded me too much of "man-vs-wild".
Given the fact it was on TV, and had to have some sort of script and camera crew, I suppose it was as good as they could do, given the real time limits and costs.
I gave thought to some of these shows, and came to the simple conclusion, that IF you were to really do a decent scenario involving a survival situation, it would be boring. Spending most of the time looking for water and food, and trying to stay secure. Not much fun, and not much in the way of being "entertained" for an hour!
Without the hollywood effects, it would be a flop at best!
Ranking right up there on the list of:
    1) watching paint dry...
    2) watching your own hair grow...
    3) watching re-runs of some election...
But for what it's worth, I'd rate the whole mess a good solid "B".
"Because" they at least attempted to show something of some value, to someone, somewhere.
"IF" these types of shows get people to start thinking and doing things....
It's worth the time to make and to watch them.

    Hoo Boy!
Some miscreants I know of (only met 1 of the 2 brothers) tried what they had seen on apoco. man..
They used some old cooking oil, (not heated nor filtered...nearly gelled in the cold weather) added some "heet" and stirred in some good old "red devil lye"...
Swished around some and poured it into their diesel truck...(seems they had "accidentally" run it out of fuel, as 2 gallons don't last long..)
Not sure what the damages are, but the lye evidentally was not diluted and reacted with the aluminum, and they had a mess....Wonder it didn't detonate!

For regular TV I thought apoc man was ok. Here's the things that stuck out to me.

He was ultra concerned about zombies watching him and tracking his movements but never looked for or even mentioned a weapon to protect himself from them if they ever met.

He was also concentrating on finding food but I don't remember him talking about finding or making safe drinking water. He did mention that he didn't want to get in the river because of city utilities being down and the river being polluted.

I had forgotten about the steel wool and 9 volt fire starter, I'm going to show that trick to the kids this weekend.

From all the Oakley stuff he was wearing they must have been a sponsor for the show.
