    All;

Would like an opinion on this; I have a 590A1 at home for self defense, loaded up with double ought. A friend of mine is coaxing me to mix in some slugs, like every third shell.

I don't see the reason (im thinking I'll need all the spread I can get in the middle of the night when I'm half awake and scared S__tless). Just wondered what everyone's opinion was.

I know full well the damage that lighter shot can do in "in-house' distances. My H-D shotgun is loaded with a couple rounds of High Brass #6, then #4 behind them. I do have some 00 Buck on the side saddle shell carrier, if needed. I have neighbors close on both sides and behind me - must take over-penetration into account.
Body armor....? A Number Six to the face fixes that.

Also, a jury of non-gun sheeple won't look so horridly upon me using 'bird shot', rather than those 'man-killing buckshot' loads....... ;)

The perp is just as dead.

For you folks that live in the FlatLands, I would agree that 00Buck and Slugs, are a bit of an OverKill, when dealing with basic 2 Legged Varmints. A Low Base #9 in the Pipe, with High Base #4s to follow, and a Slug, or two at the end, would do nicely. For us folks up North, where it isn't so much the 2 Legged Varmints, but the BIG Nasty FourLegged Critters, 00Buck, and Slugs, alternating, thru the whole 8 Shot Mag, with a Low Base #9 in the pipe, is Standard Loading for a Pump Action Stainless Shotgun. ..... YMMV.....

a few sabot type slugs are handy to have available on a side saddle or sling carrier ..... your incident might become involved in taking on a car or something similiar ......

At home, ( in the city) the 12's stay loaded with #4 shot.
    Out and about, 00 buck.
Recently I was "horsing around" and I accidentally put a paintball thru a mobile homes exterior! My youngest used to play with those "airsoft" guns, and they made some deep dents in the exterior skins on mobile homes...
Think what a slug would do!

Down here...During a hurricane, several have had to go in their attic's and blow out a hole in the roof in order to escape rising flood water's...
Shot of choice.? Good old #6

Yep, or a Moose, walking by the front door, during Moose season...... One shot, at 30 yds, and meat for a winter....

There's no homes right near mine and I keep 00 Buck in my Mossberg (Remington Managed Recoil), but lately I bought some Brenneke Tactical Home Defense slugs. I haven't tried them out yet and will shoot some before I decide if I want to put any in the shotgun for defense. I'm thinking maybe one or two of these to be fired last might work but I don't know yet.

I have found during testing that #4 or #6 steel ball spread nicely as they spew forth from my little H&R 'Tamer' 410 shotty.
Effective up to 10m with about a 40cm spread.
Currently my 'hallway clearance' weapon of choice.
Being single shot, I would personally finish off with a butt strike or a blade if necessary.

(Note: Abiding by my national gun laws I would of course have to first go to my gun safe, unlock it using duel keys, remove the 'Tamer', unlock the seperate ammunition compartment with a different key, extract ammo, and load said shotgun to make it effective as a home defence weapon :p )

As my "issues" usually involve Mr. raccoon I keep a cylinder bore 12 with #4 buck.

I use 2 number # 4's, followed by 5 000 buck shells ( by the end of the first two shots my family knows they need to be down on the floor ) then the last shot is a slug because it ends the cover vs concealment argument

I only have the wife and myself at the house, with no neighbors, so over penetration is not a problem (sounds like a personal problem, but that's another story). We both have open choke shotguns with 00 buck (12 pellets) in them for inside the home protection. I would not go with slugs because you want the pellet spread for middle of the night, very low light and an adrenalin charged situation.

    forestdavegump Got ur 6, Bubba.

Birdshot at hallway distances have always removed flesh and bone! But hey videos who gonna believe those. For some it is a must have experience to feel the shot first hand or leg or etc!

If I get into a shooting situation I want them DRT (dead right there) and don't want to screw around with shooting someone with birdshot. I would use 000 buckshot but like the 12 pellets of 00 over the 8 in 000 for the extra hits.
