after the questions in the fire steel thread, thought i'd toss this out there:
    302 Moved

compare these guys to the snake pliskin "commando survivalist"order; each carrying 5 guns, 1000 rounds, face paint, nomex gloves ,no food or water...I think these buck skinners will do just fine in just about any scenario you can dream up;save possibly full out nbc....[coffee2]

Yup, figure as long as they have something more than single shot guns OR are away from other people then these are the ultimate survivalists, being able to live off the land without a semi load of 'stuff' and just a load of knowledge.

Sometimes I think life would be better to go back that way.

My old neighbor was a guy like that, spent most of his time in a tee pee in his yard instead of his house he had 100 acres so it wasn't like anyone really knew, I did because my house was on the other side of his property and I had a easement through his property to get to mine. Have to say he has one of the most stress free lives I know, really not a care in the world, but that might be from the shrooms

You want to waltz into a compound of these guys with your fal and start making demands, raping and pillaging?? Don't think you'd keep your hair pilgrim..hard to reload with a 'hawk stuck in you noodle.folks with "oldtime" values of community are going to support one another,.50 round ball or .50bmg dead is dead. they just won't have to walk so far out to police up your body.

A tipi is a remarkable shelter, well worth the trying for comfort and convenience. Best used in base camp situations, pretty unwieldy on the trail without wagons and horses or mules (or oxen.)

    True this gear requires horses and wagons cast iron doesn't go with backpacking...not really my point, Just my usual guns are important but not the complete answer to every problem rant,and these guys do well without electricity;
( at least while out,)I know some of this is "adult dress up".and a muzzle loader will never equal a modern weapon in combat in any meaningful way.

I just read another "survival forum where the "tshtf what guns are you carrying thread" went 6 pages folks bragging of 5 necessary guns on each person: mbr And a shotgun, two major pistols, a hidden pistol hundreds if not thousands of rounds ammunition, more than one included a hand press/dies ( I assume powder/primers and projectiles) until they felt confident they had an unlimited supply. It just gets stupid:"everyman a SEAL".

Point well taken Tango. The mountain men went into the hills with staples only and depended on their skills to make do when they got there. That usually meant 2 horses per trapper. Once in the trapping area, they basically base camped and ran the traps (maybe a couple days out of base) as necessary. On those forays, they carried the several days worth of staples (flour, salt, and whatever) on their backs, usually. There was no chance of running across a platoon of smurfs, but there was always the odd indian or hungry bear to contend with, and one shot had to count.

We here often go to great lengths figuring out what to carry and what to stash in bug out situations. I have always said that if you are leaving, go fast and light, take skills well practiced; if you are bugging in, load up on the necessities, and I do not mean chips and dips, I mean basics like flour and salt.

I dont figure the ultimate super duper ultra tactical high cap rifle is needed but figure while I wouldnt WANT to square of against them if I had any given modern mil type semi auto and they had front stufers I would MUCH rather face them that way than if they also had a repeater.

My main point on the deal though was more in the idea of if one or a couple of them was say makeing their way to 'the fort' post SHTF and ran into a gang of say a dozen MZBs with modern semi autos and even basic skills with them and the only thing they had was a front stuffer then I doubt they would fare real well. OTOH I SURE wouldnt count them out if they had even say an old leaver action where they would likely have a bullet for each attacker and if not could load up another half dozen or more rounds with it quicker than a second shot with the front stuffer. Then they can have the flinter and the ability to make their own powder, projectiles and new flints to keep fed with and still be shooting when everyone elses guns turn into poorly designed clubs from lack of ammo.

I agree with the point of the thread.

To many people concentrate on guns for survival when food and shelter are more important.

Guns to keep your food and shelter, but knowledge to obtain your food and shelter is the most valuable survival tool you can own.

Just creating discussion, I can't realistically argue modern equipment isn't stronger, faster, lighter, and wouldn't multiply the efforts of one man v attackers, but there's some thing here feels right. Perhaps its not the equipment so much as a "philosophy"( gotta ponder this: brain boil it and see what precipitates out)

More"militant" types would declare that an OPINION (being If they have their "belgian wonder" .308, they will merely shoot you and yours for your resources , boil your underarmed carcass down for lamp oil...[coffee2]:)

Not the kinda folks welcome in jerhico if I'm mayor...

'skinners make their own shelter. Here's how:
    tipi - Google Search

(Of course, you can buy them, too. But why spoil the fun?)

Well I agree, and I don't mean not having any guns, but if I have 2 FALs do I really need 3 AR's and 4 shotguns etc.....

You defensive firearms battery should be well thought out a functional, it does not have to be large.

And I agree with your thoughts on the buckskinners it's attitude. You don't need a lot of stuff to keep you warm, dry, full and safe.

I carry a drop leg load bearing system (SAR) with a gas mask and spare filters, rubber gloves, and other necessary NBC equipment as standard survival kit. Couple that with advanced survival knowledge, to include plant identification and utilizing fishing as a common staple (by using a telescoping rod and reel as essential equipment), and by carrying an ultra-lite halo 3 sleeping bag and hammock with poncho as a primary sleep system, I remain mobile, light, silent, and highly efficient. As an important aside, by having knowledge on how to make your own weapon silencers, you remain silent whilst hunting big game. Also, a decent night vision apparatus makes you mobile at night, a prerequisite for evasion and escape when caught in a tight situation.

My general rule of thumb; keep mobile, and when possible if you do settle -stay mobile prepared at all times.

Just wondering, unless you are custom loading rounds for it, what cay you would use for big game from a rifle thats subsonic to remain silent even with a supresor? If the projectile is traveling at super sonic speeds then it may be near imposible to determine your exact location from the sonic crack/boom but your pressence would be obvious. Im sincerely asking because Im not sure what large game round (other than maybe .45 acp at closer ranges) is subsonic as a standard and am not familiar with ammo marketed as subsonic for rifles other than .22.

Aside from that I ABSOLUTELY agree that these guys would have a huge advantage due to the skills developed from these activities and if then equiped with slightly more modern gear (no need for uber tactical but more modern than JUST the flinter, as in repeating firearms) then I figure they would be near unstopable, far more than a mall ninja with every toy on the market.
