So a couple of members here have given me Cigars. Think I saw a Cuban in there somewhere... I don't go through Cigars very quickly so I did some searching on storage today. Seems I need a Humidor, A wooden box made of non-aromatic cedar with a humidifier and a humidity guage. Just so happened that the Smoke Shop in my hill-jack town couldn't give humidors away if they wanted to. 60% off sale.. Wee! So I bought a small one, 10"x12" around 4" deep. Had a tag of $240 on it and I walked out the door with it for under a Hundred... She even threw in 3 $5 cigars and a bottle of humidor fluid. I now have the cornerstone of the Den I want to make out of my Son's old bedroom.... Now I need a clipper, a botle of Scotch, and a bookcase that is really a door to the secret man room.
Ok, i like the cats-eye cutter unless you are smoking torpedos. Scotch: prices just shot up on my favorites due to the price of the US dollar. Glenn Rothes went from 54 bucks to 76 bucks over night. Balvenie sherrywood and porrwood finish are both excellent. One think I learned recentely about scotch. I usually drink it up. I small splash of water will open up the flavors. Remember melbo, you natural smoking tendancy is to inhale versus puff. Don't forget, to puff or you will have some sore bronchial tubes.
Right Hand, you need to send him some cigars with Connecticut Valley leaf wrappers. Most, if not all, of the Windsor Shade CoOp product goes to England (the hard way) and comes back as English cigars. Good smokes.
We're losing tobacco farm after tobacco farm every year. Until the 1970's most teens did some summer work in the tobacco fields and sheds. My dad did as a kid and I did too. It was hard and dirty work but we were proud of the 50 cents an hour we brought home after 12 hour days and the tobacco rashes were our badges of honor. Now, the workers are all imported from the islands for the summer and they live in dorms. CT kids no longer work the fields; they would rather stand behind the counter at McDonalds. The tobacco fields have some of the richest soil in CT and the sight of the shed surrounded by acre upon acre of plants shaded by white tenting is a sight to behold.
Very familiar story. I used to live in Southwick, MA, my ex still does. My ex BIL still farms in the area. The tents are hard to explain to outsiders, it is not a familiar farm crop to most folks. The scent in the curing sheds is one treat I miss. The ex BIL is one of our tribe. BTW, there are only three crops I know of that are shaded like that, hops, cigar leaf tobacco, and some varieties of chysanthemums. Only hops and tobacco are shade grown in the states that I know of.
You're right ghrit - it's hard to explain. And people think it smells like cigaretts; if they only knew what a rich aroma there is to drying leaves. It's one of the pleasures of CT
No, but I have seen the ads. I buy from local tobacco shops. It takes a little time to set up that humidor Melbo, remember only use distilled water and wipe the humidor down really good before you start the process. It should come with some directions, follow them to a "T".
I have purchased from thompsons cigars with a friend. We buy 3-4 boxes of cigars in different varieties and split them. Big savings over MI since florida prices/taxes are much smaller.
The shop actually stores there Humidors in the walk in Humidor. Was 70% when I brought it home. I did the distilled water wipe down and used the 'humidor solution' that came with it. It's a 50% Distilled H2O and 50% Propylene Glycol. Supposedly, this mix keeps the Hum at 70%. The PG absorbs excess water. They've come a long way since the days of using apple cores to humidify
