Anyone ever eat (or heard of eating) coyote? I mean, I'm sure they're edible, I know they're abundant, I've just never heard of anyone eating them. After tshtf, I know the ones around my property will be targeted for termination. I don't want them around my stock, and for that matter, I don't want to share the local cottontail and quail population with them. I've always hated to kill something without eating it though. It seems like such a waste.

I know the Koreans are still big on dog (although I despise their reasons and methods).

I've had a lot of unusual animals to eat:
beaver, cougar, caribou, muskox, bear, coon, lots of others, just not coyote.

I'm curious if anyone here has ever sampled it.

From an "It won't kill you if you ate it" viewpoint, anything with fur or feathers is OK to eat. So trying a few recipes should be safe.
From a "Tastes best with a Béarnaise sauce", let us know. ;)

Also, what would be the safe temperature for coyote? 160? 180? It doesn't seem to be listed Roasting Those "Other" Holiday Meats

Well, I have never eaten them either or known any who have but if you know any Asians who know how to cook dog it should be the same thing. Other than that they do have nice pelts so even if you werent eating them now you could thin them out and do the pelts for sale or whatever or to make coats out of so the prey animals could increase in numbers without them being a waste and having the recipees for dog you could try them out. Yote is probably pretty gamey, because of its diet, other varmints, carrion, pretty much anything it can catch.

I was taught as a boy that any scavenger animal is not worth taking a chance on. They eat carrion and animals that die with diseases, so not worth taking a chance on. With that said, I can't think of a single person I know that has eaten one. We shoot them around here for their pelts, a good one can get you $30.

Guess I should have thought about that before I posted :)

Joking aside... beaver is quite good really. Very dark red meat. I had it at a charity game feast several years ago where I got to sample like 22 different game dishes. Very cool.

The scavenger thing........ dunno..... Sounds like good reasoning, but we do eat things that scavenge, my god look at catfish... they'll eat anything!

Just wondering since Ihavent really delt with pelts before, the $30 is for a green pelt or do you have to flesh it or tan it or whatever?

Also high in fat and as I understand very nutrient dense and so ideal as a food source in any kind of survival situation where fat is generaly the most lacking part of the diet.

Green pelts, they want them so they can work them. I had beaver once, but it had a really bad smell to it, didn't want to eat it again.

The carnovorous animals carry diseases that humans are succeptible to to a much greater extent then hebrivorous animals do. if you do decide to eat a carnivore please make sure to cook the meat until it is completely cooked. Your best bet would be to pressure cook it.

Since beaver a hebrivore it is ok to eat it even raw. :)
