Just purchased a new home defense rifle. Its a SU16B made by Kel-Tec. Here is a review from the Equipped to Survive Web site. http://www.equipped.org/Kel-Tec_SU-16_Review.htm What I really like about this rifle was the price. Under $500 here in Oregon. So I will be at the range this coming weekend and will give you a range report next Sunday. Anyone else out there own one of these?
Kel- tech are supposed to be accurate............I think one of the guys in the Columbine Massacre used one
It lacks the advantages of the AR-15. For another $100, you can build an AR, and have drop in luminous sights, quick detachable optics, ambi-safety, drop in trigger jobs, lots of options as to barrel length and rifling twists, threaded muzzles, GI parts, etc, etc, etc. A bad tradeoff, in my book, to lose all that for a "savings" of $100.
Re: It lacks the advantages of the AR-15. But for compactness, it seems neat. And some ppl just don't like the AR platform.
Good to see another Oregonian, welcome aboard. Congrats on the purchase, pretty compact rifle you got. Range report yet?
ColtCarbine - Thanks for the welcome. I am heading to the range in the morning, March 26 - will post the results Sunday night. Don't mean to pry but whereabouts are you located?
Here Is the Range Report 0n the Kel-Tec SU 16 I finally got to the range today. Bad news is they were having a trap shoot on the rifle range so I had to shoot on the short range (max 50 yds). Shot about 150 rounds with no problems. Shooting all FMJ 55 gr. Shot some Miwall reloads, Wolf, S&B, Federal, and Winchester. Did not seem to have any issues other than I had two no fires with the Wolf. Using three different brands of 30 round mags plus the two 10 rounds that came with it. Had some nice 3" groups. I am sure that this rifle is way more accurate than I am. This was a very fun rifle to shoot. I would have like to been able to put more rounds through it but everyone at the range had to stop by and see the new toy. Low recoil compared to the AR15's I've shot. Being very light (just under 4.6 lbs unload) I thought it would be more. All parts seemed to function smoothly. Rifle was very solid. Everything functioned as advertised. What I really liked: 1. Weight - you can pack this around or shoot off hand all day and not get tired. 2. Extra storage of two 10 round, or one 20 round, or one 30 round in the stock. With a 30 round mag in place that up to 60 rounds - not bad for a grab and go 3. The collapsible storage - Folded I can slide it under a seat or stow it in a backpack. 4. Field stripping and cleaning - It took just a few minutes and no tools to field strip and clean. Also even after 150 rounds of which 40 were Wolf the gun was not that dirty. I think I read its something about the gas system they use. Most of the crud blows out the barrel. Any way it was very easy to clean. What could be improved: 1. Sights - this model has the standard AR 15 front site and a peep rear. They are adequate. It needs nite sites. Maybe even a low power scope but I am not a scope guy. 2. Bi-pod - its kinda neat to have one built in but its loose. It does work but as the author of the article I included in the first post stated - the point of impact is different. Really nothing else. Its a fun plinker, but will also make a good home defense carbine and will be a great packing gun. Its not an AR-15 or the like. But then again I don't think Kel-tec is trying to compete with this rifle against the ARs. Regards, Prepareordie
Thanks for the report. It sounds as though it will serve you well, especially if you can find some after market sights.
One may not "like" a shovel. but for some jobs, it's the ideal tool. "Like" has nothing to do with a weapon's effectiveness or suitability. One might "like" blondes, but that doesn't mean brunettes aren't fine performers, in every way possible. The KelTec will never be what the AR is, in numerous ways. It will never be the GI rifle, nor win the High Power matches, and until it has a .22lr conversion unit, it will certainly be an inferior rifle to the AR-15 for general survival and foraging.
