I stumbled upon a blog entry written by Hispeedal2 concerning wildfoods. It would be worth reading before you find yourself "on the road" post TEOTWAWKI".

Made some wild raspberry jam last night with berries from the hill. I will say you can survive living off the land but it's a ton of work. Me and my wife spent 3 hours to pick 2 1/2 quarts of wild berries.

We get purslane and miner's lettuce growing free here on the homestead, in addition to the crops we raise. Looks like a bumper crop of strawberries this year. I'm getting tired of eating strawberry shortcake for dessert every night!

    Heretic!

My aunt's patch isn't putting out hardly any this year so we're having to buy from the grocery store and theirs aren't very tasty this year for some reason. Most of the stuff around here is late due to all the rain we got this spring. Bummed but hopefully we'll start seeing some local stuff at the farmer's market.

The deer ate the entire patch. Not just the berries, but the whole plants. I seriously need to look into some wildlife control, but the parent's say they love to watch them. I say I love to watch them go into my mouth as piece of venison steak...

Next year they are going to plant a field of "deer food" crop, on a patch that's the closest to their route of travel. Maybe this will keep them happy, but I tend to think that it will just make them more numerous and they will come in greater numbers and eat everything.

As a kid some of the locals where i grew up shot the deer in their gardens with shotgun shells loaded with rock salt. Not bad enough to kill or really injure a deer but more than enough to scare them away for a while. You might try it out.
