Slumbering Sun Should Wake Up This Year - Yahoo! News

For those concerned about CME's knocking out the power grid and putting us in the dark, it looks like we may have another opportunity soon.

How is you faraday cage coming?

Sorry for my ignorance but in the cases of if a CME in the direction of earth would the resulting EMP be limited the hemisphere facing the sun? Or is the duration long enough to zap more than a half or what happens?

EMP AND CME are two entirely different phenomenon. They may cause similar ISSUES for The Grid, but from totally different energy sources and transmission Paths. EMP is a WideBand Energy Pulse with significant Power Density. EMP has Direct Effects on electronics thru just being inside the Inverse Square Law distance from the source. Due to its wide Band nature, it doesn't travel well thru wires, and cause overload overloads in connected systems. This is where CME has its greatest effects. It is by nature a long wavelength effect, that does travel along wires, and uses them as Giant Antennas, that bring high Voltages thru Power Transmission Lines to the terminating Gear at each end. This may cause burnouts and overloads to the Grid.

What type did you use? How did the install go?

It's an Eaton. That plus the install cost me $299. They have a reimbursement warranty if it doesn't function as advertised. We lost a bunch of stuff when the house was struck by lightning last year so we decided the cost was less than our insurance deductable if it happened again.
