No; though I'm in the midst of seriously inquiring about it. My caution is that I don't want my children to be limited by my education. I want to make sure that it will, in fact, be a beneficial path that will help their future. I've recently found that a home-schooled child does not receive a diploma. Egads. With 3 in school now, I've got more classrooms to tend to, until I get more info about other options. and more friends coming home every day! The RR inquiry led me farther than I ever got to tell you about... Met with State/Fed DOT. Got the hard copy of the report of everything (including) chemicals traveling by rail on our local tracks. The Fire Marshall retired and left me a gung-ho, serious-about-her-work replacement that will give me no "additional" info whatsoever. I spoke to the school district's safety manager and inquired about staff trainings for that type of event/catastrophe. That prompted an invitation from them (district) for me to attend the training (that I got the Fire Marshall to agree to give to the schools) and let them know how it applied to them They've also asked that I get together with the City officials and see what we can do about a city-wide mock drill/training. Yee-Haw! You know I will ! Ghrit; you know I'm tenacious and will keep you posted, as you and others here were such a great help at the origin of my quest. I've been invited to be CERT trained, which I will begin in January.
There is no reason for your education to be limiting to them. One of the things I found out when I was instructing in the Navy, is that you will be one jump ahead of the students. Sometimes you learn it with them, not a bad deal. Now and then, they will challege you and teach you something. That tells you a lot about their progress. And when the older ones start teaching the younger ones, you can bet you are measuring success. Don't worry too much about a bleeding diploma anyway, GED by testing is plenty good enough for college entrance, and if they take some tests, they just might qualify for advanced placement if you do your part. By the way, there is nothing to stop you from getting a tutor in the subjects you are not far enough along to teach. I have a sneaking suspicion you ain't done with this thought process yet. (You only think you've been busy --) And I wonder if the Fire Marshal realizes what she has bit off. Go for it, babes, you'll be doing the whole damn town a favor, and the usual suspects might even bear a hand when things get rolling. The gung ho bitch might get her chain jerked when enough people see what is going on. Tried letters to the editor yet? Always good for pot stirring.
hee hee. Your suspicions just might be dead on. Now, Ghrit; I never said she was a B, she's just young. You know as well as I that it's much easier working with someone who has been in a position long enough to know all the details that don't always get logged. Plus, I guess I just have a preference to deal with older guys rather than young girls (go figure!). Letter to the Editor?! ~giggle~ He's one of my email contacts and doesn't even bother calling to verify my comments anymore LOL! Why would your kids not receive a diploma if they were home schooled? My wife was home schooled and she receieved a diploma. A good friend of mine is home schooling their 4 kids, they will all receive diploma. One thing to look into is home school groups. Where you take your kids and meet up with other home schooled kids and they do a type of group study. I'm sure your state also provides all the required tests to prove that they are learning the required info as well (at least I think that's where they get the tests from) Ryan
Hmmm, now you've got me wonderin', too! Maybe it's a state thing. May I ask what state your wife/friends were home schooled in? Does that state still have Diplomas? I was initially under the impression that they would receive a diploma. I talked to the State Education office and they tell me different (GED only). I wonder if this has anything to do with the CIM/CAM thing? Sounds like more digging. My kids are nowhere near graduation (Kinder and 4th grade), but I won't take one step into a program without knowing where it will lead them.
It does vary by state. Around here, there are HS co-ops that are very much like old time one room schools. Parents take turns helping out in areas of expertise. Plus the home school training manuals and they also use some sort of Satellite television feed for some class aspects
One thing to think about is that a lot of employers and collages now from what Ive been hearing are starting to prefer GEDs over diplomas any way. Lets face it all a HS diploma means these days anyway is that you showed up at least most of the time, how many kids have we all seen that could barely (if at all) read thier own diploma? In order to get the GED you at least have to actualy know the material, and a lot of times thats becomeing recognized.
