anyone have low maintenance fruit or veg ideas for a plot of land I only visit once a week? Have tons of sunchokes I plan to use....what else? Might as well use the land for something! I wish it was closer so I could keep animals there!
asparagus was the first thing that popped in to my mind. Fruit/nut trees. Most can do with minimal pruning work Just about any perennial would work. Berries would also be good. We have wild black berries on our property and added raspberries last year, and have been adding 3-5 fruit trees every year.
@Leeuhhh all the suggestions above are good. Especially the bushes and trees. They take time to get established (asparagus also). If you plant fruit trees, I would put fencing around them because the elk will eat them. I am able to plant my onions in the open and the wildlife leaves them alone. If you are talking about your land that does have elk around- look for elk and deer resistant plants, unless you are planning on fencing things off. @Mindgrinder what about the birds? I know birds will wipe a choke cherry clean but will they bother goji?
Will let u you know when I actually get a berry off my gojis... *grumble* They dont like fertile soil but I was too stubborn to listen to the instructions... The potted have recycled soil that was 20/20/20 followed by 10/10/30 for my prize tomatoes....almost seems like i'd have had better results with straight potting soil.. Might have been a touch of blight. Dunno for sure - time will tell.
Bear will also go after fruit trees, especially apples. I've heard of raccoons stripping peach trees. Wildlife can be a pain in the rear when it comes to gardening and fruit ranching....
Potatoes are a favorite of mine for guerilla gardening. I like to plant three to six seed spuds in places where I go fishing or hunting. I scatter them in clearings and mulch them with pine needles. The pine needles don't look out of place as pines of several varieties grow in my area. This works with other plants mentioned here already as well. Moar in linky.
Awesome! Even just onions potatoes and garlic would be great- I eat an insane amount of veggies. I have a feeling fruit would get eaten, but if I had a ladder maybe I could at least get fruit from the top of a tree....a long long time from now when the tree gets big. LOL.
