New Orleans Police Chief: 'I'll Grab Guns'

The Second Amendment Foundation is calling upon U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to investigate New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley over his announcement last week that police in his city would once again confiscate privately-owned firearms in the event of another catastrophic storm like Hurricane Katrina.

During a live interview with a New Orleans radio station, Riley acknowledged that citizens may, under state law, carry firearms. He said, however, that police will confiscate firearms, and may arrest people, arguing that "During an exigent circumstance like that, we cannot allow people to walk the street carrying guns.”

Last summer, SAF was joined by the National Rifle Association in a federal lawsuit against post-Hurricane Katrina gun seizures. That successful lawsuit in federal district court resulted in a restraining order, and subsequent injunction.

"We believe Riley’s decision is a flagrant disregard of the federal court action, Louisiana state law and both the Louisiana and federal constitutional protections of the right to keep and bear arms,” Gottlieb said in his letter to Gonzales.

"We’re writing to General Gonzales in an effort to prevent Riley and officers under his command from committing the same egregious civil rights violations they did last year,” Gottlieb explained. "It is outrageous that Riley would plan such actions when he knows they violate both state law and the state and federal constitutions. His claim that ‘exigent circumstances’ would allow such confiscations is preposterous.

"We are forced to address this issue to Attorney General Gonzales because we know that anti-gun Mayor Ray Nagin would never tell Riley to relay that order, nor would the mayor fire Riley for willfully violating the firearms civil rights of his constituents,” he said.

"Misuse of police power is a serious matter,” Gottlieb said. "Nowhere in America can a police official violate the civil and constitutional rights of citizens within his jurisdiction under the color of law. We find it necessary to keep reminding administrators like Riley that this is still the United States, not a police state.”

I wonder if he violates the court decision, if he'll go to jail. Probably not, which is too bad :D

They have never even given back the ones they took! Court decisions mean squat - the NRA and SAF won the case but nothing has been done and NO makes excuse after excuse as why they have not complied. It's sickening. I hope next time there's a huge flushing sound as the whole mess disappears.

Way I look at it, if something like that happens and they try to take the guns then since it is an illegal act they are no longer LEOs and are instead simply looters and since they are armed looters I would fear for my life and elimenate the threat regardless of what clothes they are wearing.

We are seeing a pattern emerging here, the feddys do something outta line, congress or the courts catch it,feddy's claim ,"so what ,its an emergency",and for some reason it ends right there. Look at Arlen Spectres oversight comitteemeetings, or the 4th amendment violation of by the NSA (" clearly unconstitutional decision", by a michigan judge). Where's the teeth. Seems "we" can prove violation of law all we want to, They don't care anymore. And nobody will stand up.
I'm really believing we screwed the pooch here.

The pooch is so screwed that it couldn't get a plug nickel. On the other hand, I see that it still may have teeth if it protects itself from thugs disguised in LEO uniforms trying to steal its weapons.

I'm a cop I swore to uphold the law . No wait I'm a cop and I can say F the law and do what I damn well please .

Sounds like something many people have heard and dealt with many times throughout history .

It also sounds like a battle cry to many of us who obey the laws and try to support those that we pay to enforce them yet understand that they still apply to them while they are enforcing .

America is just a like a lemming at the rear of the pack it may be a bit before we get to the edge of the cliff , but it is running as fast as it can to get there .

It's what seperates the sheeple from the people. We all try to do something about something bad, though the sheeple will eventually come to believe 'it's good for them' and go along with it.

I seem to recall a quote of Liberty or Death. Anyone? I carry myself through this life with a lot of worries and strain on my mind though there are basic ideas that I will not even hesitate on. We are a free people and should fight any advance to move us into slavery. Yes, I said it. It's slavery.

Think on this. There was a brave warriror that prepared for the hard seasons that he knew came around every year. He protected his family from lions, snakes and other dangers. He sought food for his family so that they could thrive. Then one night while he slept, his 'brothers' broke into his house clapping him in irons and stowed him on a boat. He was transported to a new land to do the work of so many lazy people that in the end it eventually killed him. How long before his warrior spirit was broken?

My body may break when clashing against the rocks of a tyrannical mindset, though my spirit will never be crushed. I am part of the fire that lives eternal, this is just a temporary shell.

As I have heard, 'To everything there is a season'. I have heard some people say that 'God will help me'. I know that God will help me, though I know that one great part of that help was me being born with this thing encased inside my skull, a brain. I have thought processes and the ability to think for myself. I can reason and figure what may harm me and there is a great thing called 'Self-preservation' which is built directly into the human code.

So all this to say that, you will get help from those that understand that being bound into slavery by anyone is wrong and you will get help from God as long as you remain faithful. You are also responsible for your well-being. You already know jumping in front of a speeding car will kill you so you don't do it. Therefore, when something of danger comes to face you, it is either a surrender to it and diminish or you can stand and fight knowing that one day you will be reunited with all those that have gone before us and your eyes will behold the rewards which you have earned in this world.

So when danger comes for me, there is only one choice that I am going to make. I will fight to eliminate it. If the danger takes you, what is it to stop from taking those under your protection? Each of us must stand tall and decide that enough is enough. That time is moving closer and closer to us though sleeping eyes would have us believe otherwise.

Label me what you will, though sheep and coward will not be among those labels that you can truthfully attribute to me.

Okay, so this isn't that deep. It's too early in the morning. Heading to work.

Have fun all and remember, 'If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything'.
