Practice when things go bump in the night

    6Last night I had one of those awkward moments. Awoken by a strange noise in the house, I went "from what was that" to "better go check that out!". Next to my bed, I grabbed the surefire flashlight and grabbed my gun out of the handgun safe. Then, fido, who is a little hard of hearing sensed my "nervousness" and began the growls, etc. She has a nose for intruders so, I had her go ahead of me through the house as my .38 with crimson trace laser dot tracked through the rooms. The end result was simply a bump in the night, but it made me realize a few things:

    1. It is difficult to open closets and a flashlight & gun in a hand.
    2. when the adrenaline is running, everything seems louder than normal
    3. my wife sleeps like a log and needs to be awoken and the door looked behind me and she needs to have her gun ready....and we need to have a secret word that opens the locked door. Unless it is said, it doesn't opened.
    4. 2 walkie talkies in the bedrooom might not be a bad idea.
    5. Practice. Practice. Practice. I need to do this in the middle of the night a couple times a month just for practice and so I know what my house looks like and when something looks different.

    6. A protective indoor dog is a pretty nice security blanket.

    Smart thinking. We all have those moments every great once in a while. When we do everything seems "fog-like" as we are still half asleep. If practiced, we would fall back on our training instead of making it up as we sleepily go along. Good thinking Clyde. It also reminds me I need to mount some of my Surefire's on my shotgun and pistol by the bed.

    In the dark practice is a great idea! The house definitely looks different at night. Tho' my kids are far from babies, I've retained that middle-of-the-night check schedule. I'm up at least twice every night just to run a house/kid check.

    For your consideration: Monitors are not just for babies. They amplify everything in the house, when placed correctly. Very handy for intruder (or late teenager ;)) alert. Receiver in master bedroom. It's a very inexpensive addition to home security.

    Light on end of 45 is a wonderful thing Clyde (not that I have one I admit). But it does make the problem of having two hands occupied go away.

    I'm very used to bumps in the night. I do not wake up my mother - she makes too much noise. The house is small enough that I can take care of the problem. The only inconvenience I can see is I have no clue as to where any of the keys are for either the front door or any door is except to my french doors into my bedroom. I seriously need to figure out where mom misplaced all the keys (especially since the locks haven't been there that long (only 2-4 years for most of them).

    Oh well...I'll get to it eventually.

    Yeah but aint seen anything on this planet yet that could take a couple mags of 7.62 or most any other load between the eyes, glowing or not, so figure the odds of its sucess would be a fairly safe bet. :D

    My situation is such that I have mirrors and cameras all around the house inside and out, so there is no need for me to actually go out side and investigate . I have motion sensor lights all around, solar and 12 volt house powered ,inside and out.
    Monitors in the bed room at my desk.
    The means are available that one not need to put them self in harms way out side unnecessarily .
    But certainly if the threat is not diswayed by lights and cameras, and you've identified it as "real", then actions need to be weighed against 911 response time.
    Case in point, multiple intruders, possible home invasion.
    I don't particularly endorse having a flash light on the gun, that is simply providing the intruder a fantastic target.
    If motion sensor lights are already on, there is no need for flash lights, giving my position away.
