  1. Hi everyone, My name is Becky and am about to go off the grid within a month. I hope to learn many things and have so many questions. I hope to make my transition to this way of life a bit easier by your advice and helpful tips. I hope you all will not pick me apart should I have what some would call redundant questions if they have been asked a million times already. I have 10 Acres , small cabin and two small trailers with a cook house and well already in place. The well is currently running off a generator. Again I hope I can learn many things from your forum. Happy to be apart Becky

  4. Thank you, I am still trying to figure out things here. Will be most happy to put a picture up as soon as I figure this out and your forum. So excited to finally find good people who will help me. My friends think I'm crazy for doing this.

Welcome L.T. More power to you for wanting to live a more sustainable, self sufficient lifestyle. There are many here who are happy to help, and answer questions. Don't worry about whether or not similar questions have been asked by those who have come before you. All of us were newbies to the site at some time or other.

Friends, if they actually are true friends, rather than fair weather acquaintances, will support you and even encourage you, even if it may not be something that they might personally do themselves. We all must make our own way in life, making our own decisions, and accepting responsibility for their consequences, both good and bad.

There are plenty of downloadable resources in the Reading Room Forum, so be sure to check that out.

    Cheers for now from chello

Hello @Living Tranquil glad you joined the monkey. Questions are good and the people here are very helpful. Sounds like you have a great start on achieving you dream. I was wondering if you are going to be off grid in an area that has the 4 seasons (winter)?

Let us know if you need any help or if you have a certain questions. Enjoy!

  8. It's not cold like up north gets. But I have lived in the Florida Keys for so long this property is going to feel frigid to me during winter months. It does get frost and I have seen it during hunting season with a light dust that looks like a sheer blanket of snow, but soon melts as soon as the sun comes up. I have never been completely without people around. There are some in these 1000's of acres doing the samething but I don't know them and not sure if they are friendly yet LOL

    Thank you

Actually I am sitting here in my house in the Florida Keys saying to myself dang it's going in the mid 40's at the property tonight. All a while I have my A/C so I don't die. lol This will be a huge change for me. Heck no more hurricanes to worry about for the most part. haha

I couldn't imagine going thru a hurricane. That is not a typical disaster scenario in my AO.

    Glad to have you LT!

Most people here have already said what needs to be about this site and the people here, so I won't repeat it all.
Looks like you have a BOL already with water available, so you have an excellent start.

Don't worry if your friends think your cuckoo. There are more and more people thinking about this all the time, so if you're nuts, there are a bunch of us who are just as crazy. I just found out my sister is doing the same thing last week.

I miss Florida. SW coast, that is --not the Miami area.
I was down there when Charlie came right over head, it was an experience I will never forget. Devastated a town right next to me, and the power was out for only a few days (for me). It's amazing how the community pulled together.

    Wilkommen zum Monkey. ;)

  20. So far we have been lucky. We have not had a direct hit in over 20yrs. We do get storm surges which are in the lower keys.
