    Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks
    From correspondents in New Orleans
    05sep05

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

All I can think is it's too bad more liberal actors weren't there and the boat sank in 20' of water. Ahhh, I knew I shouldn't post on this!

To bad I didn't see that! I would have hovered down and blew him over! Maybe dropped some cases of MRE's into the boat and try to break it up even worse!!!

You know it's nothing but a publicity stunt when someone shows up with an entourage and a personal photographer. The boat was already full!

I heard a CNN reporter today say that military help was starting to "trickle in". then she was talking about some people who had been trapped in their house for a week with no food or water. When she interviewed them, they told her they didn't need rescuing and weren't going anywhere. They would just stay put and they were find. Maybe Sniper66 should hover oven the press so they know the military is there. Iit would be unfortunate if it was as they were broadcasting. There is enough real disaster without the press sensationalizing it even more.

That movie was the only thing Sean Penn did right, and that was just because he was playing a f*ck up!

"Hey Spicoli, this is my time, and I choose to land a Blackhawk on top of your boat."

Sniper-66 shall henceforth be known as "Mr. Hand."

    What a great movie.

There are no more people needing rescued in NO. The people that are left are those that have finally given up and want out. I watched Huey put itself in danger to hoist a man out yesterday and less than a couple blocks away was a dike the ran the entire width of the city. The water was only three foot deep!

Mr. Hand/Sniper-66 what has been your primary role? Picking up those that were stranded, if so how many did you pickup? What is your take on this whole mess? Do you think there will be 10,000 dead like they said?

No, the only folks that are doing the rescuing are the Medevac and other aircraft with hoist capability. I am flying a slick, so hauling is the only thing I can do. Currently, I am providing C&C to the Division commander right now. I was supposed to fly the sector commanders around their areas to get a feel for what they have, however my aircraft broke this morning, so I have been doing maintenance. Tomorrow, we are going to re-deploy closer to the mission. In a couple days, we will jump in on the mission, however, the SAR mission is over, now it becomes a Log mission. The ground crews are going around and marking the houses with the dead in them. Now that the glory is over, the Air Force and Navy is leaving in droves, so the stinky mission will be left to the Army. As a matter of fact, today, Wizzard called for a mission and a crew responded. It was a body haul, when the mission was over, the crew made a call over the net to ask for what the mission is. When Wizzard called the next mission, everyone asked what it was and Wizzard called it a body haul. No one would take it!
Now the glory is over, it is time to get down to the nasty business of clean up. As for thousands, I doubt it, but it will be in the several hundreds. I suspect a lot of elderly that didn't have a means to leave.
My take is that this city will have a helluva time rebuilding as they need to get the houses tore down and turn the flood area into a park or industrial area so this doesn't happen again, but that won't happen.

Our agency called for volunteers, but they don't know when anyone will be sent. I didn't volunteer for this go-round, as I have a bad staph. infection on my calves, and that contaminated water would eat me up with all of the sores on my calves. I might for another go around though when I get healed up. Especially since it looks like the military is controlling things. The NOPD is so corrupt at so many levels I wouldn't trust them to watch anything. They would keep others from stealing so they could. It has been that way for years. Good luck down there. When you get a chance cruise through the French Quarter and see if Pat O'Brien's is open. If they are have a hurricane for me. I miss those!
