I was almost home from a long day at work, when the emergency broadcast noise went off on the radio. In frustration I turned my radio to other channels, but I just heard the same dang noise so I just turned off the radio. I got home a few minutes later and parked the truck alongside my daughters car, went inside and grabbed a cold soda. And then I headed back outside to finish splitting the wood we had cut up last weekend. As I came around the corner of the wood shed…. I could see a flash of light on the horizon off to the East. What the heck was that I wondered, lightning, on such a clear afternoon, probably not? Then I saw another two quick flashes off in the same direction and knew something was not right. As I ran back to the house to get to the TV, lots of thought's ran through my mind. Was it an explosion at the nearby town’s factory, was there a train explosion… but what had happened eluded me. I tried to turn on the TV, but all I got was a blank screen, the satellite signal was evidently not working. That is something that happens on days when it is raining or snowing heavy, but we are having a nice clear late afternoon. I grabbed the radio and turned it on and only heard a hiss coming through the local stations signal.

In the coming hours, I was able to rally with my local neighbors and was able to piece together through all of them, what had happened, as best as we could tell. A couple of the local Ham's had picked up on enough intel, to give us a pretty good picture of what had happened.

And now, we sit here on the edge of the abyss, watching the demise of a once great nation and those of our closest allies. Today we saw the burning of our major coastal cities and some interior areas, due to a simultaneous nuclear attack. The East coast was hit by the Russians and the West coast was attacked by the Chinese and North Korea. Early reports are in that Russia and Iran also attacked major cities in Europe, Israel and the Middle East with nuclear weapons. These attacks within the US and Europe have decimated large amounts of the population, centered in and nearby most major metro areas.

As a second strike, the US and her allies launched a counter attack and most likely destroyed the major cities of our adversaries. Those reports at this time are unconfirmed; since world- wide communications are essentially down, due to high altitude EMP’s, destroying orbital satellite platforms as well as most other forms of communication capabilities, launched by all parties.

I have been prepping for 7 years now, but I never suspected that my world would ever come to this (call it hoping for the best, naive yes).....to the point that I would actually have to survive the end of the world as I knew it…….!!!

So Monkey’s… what do I do know, what are my first steps to being able to survive this madness? Do you have a plan, what you would do right now with the end of society having come to your doorstep? I have “stuff”, firearms & ammo, food, water, comm’s and essentials, as we all should be working towards having, to be better prepared for what may come. But man, I am in shock…. What do I need to be doing right now as far as survival priorities, what should I be doing in the next few days, weeks and so on? Help me to be better prepared for this new reality?

    Help!!!!

    Another survivor~~~

Duck and cover you damn fool. Ain't u got no edumication? I thought this was a real question by a newbie to start with, but how could that be. Long time Monkey, Land Projectile is the author. Seriously I think this subject has been discussed from many viewpoints over the years. If this was/is a serious post (it really was neat, interesting, vintage, art work), then I apologize and will back off to my bunker in the woods and play some old 60s end of the world music and mind my own business. Peace brother .... out.

Start assembling your team and assign responsibilities. Set perimeters and decide if you're needing to make your bugout preps. You'll have strength in numbers, unless you really like working alone and feel safer that way.

Sounds like the beginning of a Jerry D. Young TEOTWAKI / PAW short story. (y)American Preppers Network • View forum - Jerry D Young Fiction

Quite apart from the physical preparations (food, water, medical, fuel, transport, shelter, communications, sustainment, and security / self defence tools and consumables), and intangible preps like training, education, alliances, knowledge base, Intel....that should already be in place...

Now comes time to put into immediate effect contingency plans, emergency situations policies, practices, procedures and protocols, that have been formulated, tested and practiced before SHTF.

Security and defence measures become immediately operational, and the family / MAG rigs for "silent running" in a hostile environment.

No need to cancel milk or mail deliveries....they just won't be coming anymore.

Edit: If the mushroom is that close....I don't think I'd be standing and gawking....I'd be taking steps....frickin' long and fast ones to the cellar / basement. ohno

I'm not sure where to begin, Something like this is just so far outside my wheel house I cannot even contemplate it. Beyond that, I would instinctively resort to my N.B.C. training and start to try and figure out if and more likely when the fall out would reach me. A world ending exchange like this would likely see me end it all rather then suffer the effects of all the radiation, there would be very few safe places on this earth left, and it would be next to impossible to get there in time with out suffering from the effects! A lessor exchange would see me trying to figure out if I am safe to Bug in place, or to bug out some where likely to not see radiation, but it all depends on if I survive the initial exchange and where I am when it happens!

[applaud] @Yard Dart for the post :) [winkthumb]

This Survivor has made some yuuge mistakes. If the survivor(s) are not in Vault 111 before or immediately after the exchange they are gonna be in yuuge trouble :(

All monkeys should think about runnin the ES 5.x apocalypse simulator on their hardware if their hardware supports it. ;)

    It really makes ya think.

Well, hell; YD... You should already have a plan and be executing it.

Remain calm, assemble the family, load your weapons because people are going to get ugly, fast. Secure your residence because bugging out through unknown territory at this point is too high a risk. You should have a plan for bugging in.

After the first one week, many will be without food or water. After two weeks those numbers will increase and by three weeks time most still out of the compounds will be desperate and violent. When the military is mobilized or local Militias organize, they may make sweeps through neighborhoods looking for food, weapons, ammunition, automotive spares, clothing and anything useful as well as conscripts to help either restore order or defend against mob violence or other Militias. You need to be running a cold camp, your home needs to appear to have been ransacked, a vehicle in the driveway with the hood up, no battery, flat tires or maybe a missing wheel and an empty fuel tank helps to sell this as well as the structure being destroyed or partially burned. Once staged, make sure nothing changes in it's appearance.

Your safe hold should be concealed quite well such that no one wants to search in an effort to find it. You have done this by purposely collapsing timbers of your home around the entrance to your safe hold and using a hidden means of access and egress. Air intake should be carbon filtered and well disguised as should be the exhaust. You will be utilizing a composting toilet and packaging the compost. You will have night vision and a means to determine if someone is snooping about your AOA. Your safe hold will have a sufficient source of water storage.

Patrols will gradually become less frequent with time but, you can depend on the military to patrol on regular intervals. They will be looking for militants and civil insurgents as these groups will cause disruption in what remains of civilization. You and your group must remain mentally strong as there will be a desire to just give up to the Militias or military. You must have major and minor medical knowledge and teach it to your group. There must be books to read and a way to provide light for extended periods of time up to six months. You must venture out and collect intelligence without contacting anyone or being detected to determine whether there is any civilization to return to or whether at some point you and your group will be able to chance moving to a more remote and secure location. You and your group will constantly drill through a variety of scenarios until your responses are automatic. Life will be hell for everyone, worse for others.

    Good luck to you....

Get the dosimeters zeroed and on each person, set up the remote sensors for the V-717 and hook the AN/PSR-1A leads to the monitor. Then worry about the clueless ones that will likely cause hate and discontent...

Eta...posting was delayed due to neighbor coming over to ask what the explosions were. Seriously! Talk about timing LOL

Well, the obvious advice is to expect and plan for the worse because doubtful it will get better than that...

I should have known Tac would have prepped 60's Era end of the world music......(y)

Great motivation and guidance from all so far!! Now where did I stash the visquene to button up the house. The green house has been closed up to keep the bad stuff out, once we start to receive fallout from overseas. Being on the West coast, I have a little time before that comes. I have both bathtubs full of water and just pulled out the NBC box of supplies. Time to get back to work, be back in a bit. Keep throwing out ideas please.

Good for particulate and alpha fallout, not at all good for beta and useless for gamma or neutron

Will not be that close to a mushroom cloud let alone staring at since there may another in bound that will blind us.
It is just an illustration but if that was us we would be in one of those 50's cars that should run after the EMP pulse motivating locked n' loaded to our place off of a 1.5 lane gravel road.
