Heading into law this Friday is Tennessee’s Senate Bill 1736, which will put into action something gun owners have been encouraging for years.

As of July 1, if a handgun carry permit holder in Tennessee is injured, suffers bodily injury or death, incurs economic loss or expense, property damage or any other compensable loss on a property posted as a gun-free zone, they can sue the person or entity who stripped them of their right to self defense.

    SWEET!

In layman’s terms, any permit holder injured as a result of being stripped of their right to self defense, and their handgun, in a posted gun-free zone can file a lawsuit within two years of the event as long as they meet the following requirements:

    • were authorized to carry a gun at the time of the incident
    • prohibited from carrying a firearm because of a gun-free sign
    • the property owner was not required to be posted by state or federal law and posted by choice
Can you imagine? Holding gun-free zone property accountable for injuries people sustained by being disarmed and left defenseless? Groundbreaking.

Think this legislation belongs in your state? Call your representative today, then get your friends and community involved as well. If it has to start with one person, why shouldn’t it be you?

Want a Gun-Free Zone? Tennessee Says That's on You: LITERALLY

You mean that some folks actually pay attention to these signs?!
Unless it is a school, a courthouse or federal property..... mine will remain on me. ;)
In my AO, they have lots of little gun free stickers on the front doors of business in Seattle (so cute of them).... but all they can do is trespass you if you refuse to leave, once identified as carrying a firearm and asked to leave.
If you are carrying properly, they will never know.... and if I end up having to pull in defense... I would much rather have to answer why I was carrying... then why I did nothing to defend myself or others.

But I do like the new Tennessee law. [winkthumb]

I obey when there's a metal detector ahead. Ft Lewis got my Kershaw. Well at least a soldier did. I figured it went to a good cause.

The last time I had fingerprints done for a new access card, I walked up to the door of the plain looking building, saw the armed fed guard and the metal detector before I went through the door.... walked back to the truck and disarmed. When I came back to the door, the guard buzzed me in and just smiled... he knew what I had done.

TSA would fall under the Federal Exemption, in the Tennessee Statute....

This is good news...but I am still a bit confused why a person that is legally armed and legally licensed cannot sue the State or Federal government if they are harmed, for example, in a school? Are airports restricted? I went to pick up the wife and was carrying, didn't give it much thought until now... Federal parks?

"the property owner was not required to be posted by state or federal law..."

EDIT: I will certainly like to see this law here in Idaho as I would love to inform COSTCO that nothing better happen to me while I shop unarmed and helpless in their store due to their PC regulation.

good, but still advances the wacky notion that one must be "authorized" to carry a firearm.

Most National Parks, outside the DC Beltway, are NOW following the State and local Statutes on Carry, concealed or otherwise. This happened soon after McDonald was decided and became SCOTUS Precedent. The NPS was afraid they would be sued in the Nearest Federal District Court, and LOSE, so they bit the Bullet and changed their Rules, before it ever got into Court. Wasn't a Battle they wanted to fight, and figured that they wouldn't, and couldn't win...

    I'm
At least one National Historical Site hasn't caught on yet. FWIW, I went in, open carry, without even seeing the no gun sticker, about 2 inches square on every one of the doors I passed thru (at least a dozen.) Had the place to myself within a "few" feet of active rail lines. I have no clue if the ranger at the gate even saw that I was carrying, but if so, he said nary a word.

Not sure, but I've never had a problem. Obviously you can't get through the screening area, but other than that I say F'em. What they can't see just might save me and the family.

Airports follow local and State Statutes, outside the TSA Security Zones....

Its places like this I totally ignore the signs. I always carried concealed. That is unless I am out in the woods camping or fishing.

I have said it before, I dont want anyone to know I am the good guy with the gun.
I hope I have the courage to act if needed and if I do I dont want the bad guy to know from what direction death might come.

I hear ya, @AD1 . And, I think you will act. No fair fight, kill or be killed, so if I got a clear field of fire and can shoot him in the back then the bastard is going down. No remorse on my part because I didn't ask for it. He did. You, me, we just happened to be there.
