Well we go to WM quite a bit - the wife likes it for all the stuff they sell that's cheaper than anywhere else. I get ammo but have never and would never buy a gun there.
This is much ado about nothing. Wally's is playing Bloomberg for the fool he is! So they get some free publicity for 'fighting crime' (which we know is just BS) and they really don't have to do anything, as the Form 4473 already takes care of the paperwork. Bloomberg is too stupid and self-centered to realize he's playing into Wally's hands. Hahahahaha!!!
Xumxing is off, here. How will they know if the sold weapon is used in a crime? So what's the point of the database? Looks to me as though all they will have is a record of the sales. Just more intrusive than the yellow sheets they already use.
Considering the fact that so many of their stores have stopped selling guns the costs involved in this bright idea will more than likely have to be shared with the sales of their other products , which in effect raises prices storewide . Old Sam Walton was a genius and built himself an empire , an empire that his moronic kids and grandkids are working on destroying allowing these Antigun zealots to gain control of . All bright and unnecessary moves like this do is make Walmart more susceptible to competition . If Kmart ever gets it's head out of it's butt and dumps it's own Antigun asswipes it could once again become a force to be reckoned with in the retail world and kick Walmarts tail back to Arkansas where it belongs .
I think Seawolf is right and that WM will only benefit from this. They are already the #1 retailer of guns in the nation and now most people will look favorably upon their "efforts to help crime". That people like me will not buy a gun there won't hurt them, but most will applaud them for this.

Well the reason I disagree is this , the people who buy guns from them are already regular shoppers for other merchandise , and they wont pick up any die hard rich anti gunners because that group of people would never shop at a Walmart or any other discount store . The effect from this has to be in higher prices because for one you have this , that and the fact that they want to video tape each firearms transaction . Having quality software made isn't cheap cost perhaps $100,000 or more depending on just what they want it to do . Then you have the hardware of cameras and even trouble shooting for the software for bugs as it is put into use , again technicians don't work cheap . Then each store has to have storage for all of this or ship it off to the home office . Imagine if 100 stores all put the initial data on a computers hard drive then transfer to disk and ship to the home office once a week for keeping even if shipping is say a minimum of $3 from each store thats $300 per week multiplied by 52 thats 15 grand just in shipping disks to the home office for a year and the article says they have 1,100 stores selling guns . The Cameras for this will have to be uniquely placed to record a persons face while at the counter filling out the forms because just a standard ceiling camera rarely gets a good picture of a persons face , that means a lower placement and damaged Cameras or some serious thought and expense put into installing them . If they try to contain the cost in the sporting goods Dept their prices will rise to the point their guns will no longer be cheaper than a traditional gun store . If they spread the costs out to other products competitors may now beat them . I can't speak for you but when it comes to paper towels , TP and household cleaners and under ware why spend anymore than you have to ? I think with the price of fuel people will be looking to save every dime and after all isn't that why Walmart succeeded in the first place ?
I've bought three guns from Wal-Mart in the past, but I absolutely will not buy anything firearm related from them ever again.
Perhaps hard to believe, but a lot of the guns they sell are crap. They buy seconds when possible, and they negotiate large buys for specific guns, that are manufactured to lower standards, sometimes that have parts missing that are not necessary. Remington 700 is one, the Marlins were another when the .17hmr craze was underway, remington shotguns are another, to name a few. And ammo? Don't even get me started. I know this because I worked for them, and trust me, nothing gun related that you need to rely on should be purchased there. Muchless with this specifically crappy turn of events.
This could work in our favor - as WalMart killed off a lot of small FFL businesses by undercutting their prices. Now, as they begin to stop selling guns in many stores, and increase the cost of purchase in others - this could mean a resurgence in FFL businesses. I already know of three FFLs opening up here in town in the last couple years - they are doing slow but steady business, and better as time goes by. Yep, I applaud WalMart's new initiatives!! More power to them! It means more good gun businesses for us!!

I do a very large portion of my shopping at Walmart, even wine in that price range. lol I have bought at least a half dozen long guns from them and had no problems with them, also buy a majority of my ammo there since they have the best prices. I really dont see a significant change here. they will; Keep track of all guns sold-already required by the AFT with their bound book and yellow forms video tape purchases- they video everything in their stores keep track of any guns sold used in crimes-LE will generaly track guns back to the last FFL to try to find who bought them so they will be notified there already vet employees handleing firearms-they do criminal checks on all employees and pretty sure ATF would frown on parolees working gun counters under their FFL anyhow The most this may change things would be that they would send the video from that camera along with copies of yellow forms probably already sent to HQ via internet conection. The NICS check would already tell them if the buyer used a gun for a crime since they would get a no sale from them in that case. Even if they did up software to double check it they already have IT guys includeing those who write new programs on payrole so just gives them busy work. Basicly aside from holding the video (which also helps protect them from any ATF BS) they wont have to change ANYTHING to meet all of what all FFLs pretty well do now and will do all of what they claimed. I could also see it being a GOOD thing for progun purposes. We all know that the percentage of guns used for crimes is very law and the number of legaly purchased guns bought from FFLs used in crimes are absolutely miniscule. So after they keep these records for a while and the stats can then be clearly pointed at in black and white that show and PROVE that out of say 500,000 guns sold there were only say 2 used in crimes by their purchasers, then it tends to blow big holes in the antis ideas that gun sales equate to crime. Wallmart tends to be pretty gun friendly. As a corperate policy they are even much more welcomeing of CCW and in some areas open carry than most any other large retailers. Corperate policy for them in general is if its legal where the store is then its fine and gun buster signs are not even up to the managers. Seems to me they are simply telling the idiots that dont know what already is required that they will do what is required and letting it sound like their idea.
