We won! Fermi finds higgs boson!

    the fermilab tevatron ( accelerator) in batavia illinois
    was in a neck and neck race with theMuch morepowerful large hadron collider recently completed in europe to discover the Higgs boson a mathematically predicted particle which gives matter the property of "mass".
    are our promised "flying cars" finally in our future??


    Tommaso Dorigo, a physicist at the University of Padua, has said in his blog that there has been talk coming out of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, that the Higgs has been discovered. The Tevatron, the huge particle accelerator at Fermi - the most powerful in the world after the LHC - is expected to be retired when the CERN accelerator becomes fully operational, but may have struck a final blow before it becomes obsolete.

    If one form of the rumour is to be believed - and Prof Dorigo is extremely circumspect about it - then it is a "three-sigma" signature, meaning that there is a statistical likelihood of 99.7 per cent that it is correct. But, of course, that is only if the rumour is to be believed.
    In the post, titled "Rumors about a light Higgs", Prof Dorigo said: "It reached my ear, from two different, possibly independent sources, that an experiment at the Tevatron is about to release some evidence of a light Higgs boson signal.
    "Some say a three-sigma effect, others do not make explicit claims but talk of a unexpected result."
    While media attention has been focusing on the LHC, the Tevatron has been quietly plugging away in the search for Higgs. In the 27 years since it was first completed (it has been regularly upgraded since then) it has discovered a quark and observed four different baryons. While it has not been able to pinpoint the elusive Higgs, it has narrowed the search, reducing the window of possible masses where it might be found.
    Last year, Fermi physicists said they expected to have enough data to find or rule out the Higgs by early next year, and gave themselves a fifty-fifty chance of finding it before the end of 2010.
    The Higgs boson is the last of the particles posited by the standard model of particle physics still to be found. It is said to explain why other particles have mass, and its discovery would confirm the standard model. If its existence is ruled out altogether, then other, previously less popular theories will have to be examined.

    IMO this is about as relevant to helping the world as american idol.

    FYI Although Einstein theory E=MC^2 describes the properties of energy not matter and shows that LIGHT WAVES can't go faster than the speed of light. It does not actually mean other matter cannot go faster than light. Can sound waves go faster than sound? No. Sound travels as fast as it can travel, but other things can go faster. So hopefully this research will help these phd's finally realize that faster than the speed of light travel is possible, and to step outside of einstiens box

    I like this stuff ( physics geek I guess " Yo the LHC is "soopah- doopah fine...") Mass is what keeps us from traveling near or at the speed of light. If we know what "causes" mass and perhaps we can turn it off; or shield us from it, there's your flying around without much thrust or lift to stay airborne. Plus this is an in sight into other dimensions.

    nope being stuck with only einstiens explanation for light travel is what keeps us from travelling the speed of light.

    Light has mass, albeit teeny tiny. So since it has mass. we can both agree to this right?

    So then E=MC^2 says mass goes to infinty as you approach the speed of light. SO then light particles would have infinite mass and would smash stuff up. Or do they not have infinite mass? Or is the equation wrong? Or Does the equation not describe movement, but other physical dynamics which allows some answers like nuclear reactions etc. but doesn't cover movement?

    Didn't think photons had mass though light is bent by gravity so you must be correct. Tachyons(edited) don't. e-mc squared is mass converting to energy and back.
    ,"part of special relativity" has to do with mass increasing as velocity increases to where it goes to infinity at that final step to light speed( "ridiculous speed");)
    I think: e=mc square( I've never used the "up arrow"):mass x the speedof light("C") squared= the energy released or energy divided by c squared = mass created .
    I'm no physicist so I'm not gonna claim expert or even 400 level knowledge here...

    I always heard that was the issue with the speed of light travel. mass would go to infiinite, thus impossible.

    Then after thinking about it. I was like well wait light has mass, and it's going the speed of light, so what gives here. Something is amiss. Or I may be missing something entirely. However They thought that faster than sound travel was impossible too.
    And can sound waves travel faster than the speed of sound? So naturally light probably can't travel faster than the speed of light. Which leads me to believe that einsteins theory only covers light or energy, and not actual matter.

    IMO light speed is just a number, and can be achieved and surpassed, but only in a vacuum, so no friction and with good guidance computers so you don't run into anything.

    Hmmm or maybe when mass reaches the speed of light it converts to energy, like all matter is merely energy at a slow vibrational state. So at the speed of light it turns into energy then when you slow down it reverts back. Who really knows.
