Its an awesome story of preserverence and will power.... good post...

There was a comparison... this person was a basic survivor who used what he knew to survive... a well trained pilot on the otherhand... downed his plane on a beach and was found dead from lack of water... Airforce survival training taught that had he dug a hole in the sand 70-75 feet up from the water line and better yet looked for when the beach was low... he would have found suitable fresh water... in fact the searchers did just that and found water.... sometime all the training in the world won't help you if you haven't trained your mind to stay calm and use what you know....

    That is truly impressive.

Here is another writeup.... a little more detail.

"The U. S. Navy was so impressed by his survival skills that they made a short documentary re-enacting his ordeal. They used it for recruitment, but when Poon Lim decided to enlist in the Navy himself, he was turned down for being flat-footed! (I guess that the Navy bureaucrats felt that he didn't meet the minimum requirements needed to ensure survival at sea.)"
